Hemorrhoids Symptoms & Tips to Reduce Pain

A hemorrhoid is an enlarged or twisted vein in the wall of the lower rectum andor the anus. Hemorrhoids may occur for many reasons, the most common of these are the extra pressure placed on the anorectal area by frequent constipation or by pregnancy; aging, obesity and the frequent use of enemas or suppositories can also be significant factors. Hemorrhoids or ‘piles’ as they are sometimes called may be so insignificant that you will hardly notice that there is a problem or they may be so severe that the pain is excruciating and, in the more extreme cases, you may experience bleeding.

Hemorrhoids may be classified as internal or external but it is possible to have both at the same time; these categories are simply referring to the hemorrhoids you can see outside the anal opening and those that are not apparent outside of your body.

Hemorrhoids that are severe enough to require medical treatment are least common in men and women in their 20s or younger. It is estimated that after age 30, however, three-quarters of all Americans will have hemorrhoids that require medical treatment; most of those cases will involve men and pregnant women.

Symptoms

Minor hemorrhoids internal or external will not be painful and may go away without treatment of any kind.

A more serious hemorrhoid may bleed and you may notice blood in the toilet bowl, on the feces, on the toilet paper or on your undergarment.

If an internal hemorrhoid becomes large enough it will protrude through the anal opening. Often it can be pushed back inside if it does not go back inside by itself. These protruding internal hemorrhoids quickly become irritated and painful if they are allowed to remain outside. If it cannot be pushed back inside, a visit to the doctor quickly becomes a priority.

External hemorrhoids, if they are large, however, can be painful when attempting to clean the anal area after a bowel movement, they are also subject to blood clots. If a blood clot forms a painful lump may develop and the skin around the anal area will become red. This is not a life threatening situation but it does call for medical intervention.

To Reduce the Frequency and Pain of Hemorrhoids

Sometimes changing your lifestyle or, more importantly, your dietary habits will allow you to avoid a reoccurrence of hemorrhoids. Adding items with a high fiber content to your diet may be enough to avoid constipation, other tactics may involve drinking six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water per day, losing excess weight and drinking a fiber supplement. Sitting on a toilet seat while reading a book is bad idea because it increases the pressure on the veins that are likely to become irritated and swell.

If you have an external hemorrhoid, perfumed soap or toilet paper may irritate it. Use a pre-moistened towelette or one of the hemorrhoid products on the market to reduce the pain and discomfort. Try sitting in a tub of warm water to reduce pain or using an ice pack to reduce swelling.

If these ‘home remedies’ do you no good, see your doctor. There is no need to live with the pain of hemorrhoids.

Radiology Is A Major Breakthrough In The Medical Field

Earlier we only had x-ray method of detecting a disease but since last 10-15 years we have other methods like ultrasound, and other imaging methods. Imaging simply means creating an image of the insides of your body and radiology is the use of radiation for different types of “imaging,” including X-rays and radarscopes.

When doctors take the help of radiation for various types of imaging then it is called the science of radiology. Actually there are many other names for it. You can call it radioscopy or clinical radiology. When radiology is used for medical purpose then it is called clinical radiology.

Radiology is used for treating and diagnosing various types of disease or injuries. Radiation therapy is use of radiant energy to destruct tumors by radiation. With the help of radiology, a radiologist can x-ray or do ultrasound or use the method of magnetic assisted resonance imaging to take photographs of the bones of your body or your arteries or the soft tissues parts of your body.

The person who is a specialist in this field is called a radiologist. He has deep knowledge of understanding and reading an image or what we tend to call x-ray and they can tell us accurately how severe is the injury. It can even see the tumors that may be there. They are always correct in their reports. For this very reason, the doctors ask us to get a report done. Only a report of this kind can confirm it. The radiologist reads the report and even discusses with the doctor on the method of treatment that has to be followed. Radiology is so important that those medical clinics that dont have their own radiology lab have to depend on others for getting it done.

Since the entire treatment of the patient is based on this report we can well understand the importance and responsibility of the radiologist. He must take the image very carefully and also study it carefully. Suppose he is not careful enough then there may be defects in the report and that may subsequently lead to wrong diagnosis and wrong medication. Dont think that it is an easy job. Suppose the patient is very ill, or he has hurt himself badly or is having severe pain then he will be restless. This makes it very difficult for the radiologist to calm the patient enough so that he may allow the radiologist to do his work properly. The radiologist must be very patient and must know how to tackle difficult patients. He must also explain to the patient the procedure of radiology and also study his medical records carefully; many of us do get intimidated by those big machines.

Plastic Surgery Where Science Meets Art

Today, plastic surgery is synonymous with Hollywood and its never ending quest to remain young and beautiful forever, through mammoplasty breast reduction or augmentation, mastopexy breast lift, rhinoplasty nose lift, chin augmentations, cheek augmentations, tummy tucks, liposuction, and face lifts. These procedures are more commonly referred to as cosmetic surgery. However, the art and science of plastic surgery is not solely limited to improve the physical appearance of an aging Hollywood actor. In fact, this particular branch of surgery was developed to correct disfigurement and restore impaired function. This type of surgery became known as reconstructive surgery, which can be defined as the correction of a congenital or acquired deformity; as opposed to cosmetic surgery, which entails the correction of a perceived physical imperfection.

The use of the word plastic does does not refer to the synthetic polymer material, but is derived from the Greek word plastikos, meaning to mold or shape. This refers to the fact that plastic surgeons typically mold and reshape bone, cartilage, muscle, fat and skin to achieve the aesthetic results they desire. These body parts may be moved to fill, alter, or cover the appearance of a defect, or completely removed.

Although rudimentary plastic surgery methods were being practiced as early as 800BC, the techniques being used today are largely attributed to Sir Harold Delf Gillies, a Cambridge-educated surgeon from New Zealand. He is often referred to as the father of plastic surgery. Gillies joined the Red Cross during World War I and saw the need for a plastic surgery unit for the British troops after seeing the French surgery units in Paris. This war was particularly gruesome because it had the distinction of being the first fully mechanized war, and the advent of heavy artillery, shells and machine guns meant more devastating injuries than ever before could be inflicted. The War Office recognized the necessity for a specialized unit of surgery and subsequently sent Gillies to the Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot to set this up, thus becoming Britain’s first plastic surgeon. Soon men began pouring in to the facility from the field hospitals, all with jaw and face injuries that required reconstruction.

Gillies was determined not only to restore the function of these wounded men but to also make the person look as normal as possible, if not more attractive than before. He called his brand of plastic surgery, a strange new art. This melding of function and aesthetics underlined his entire body of work. Gillies pioneered many surgical techniques and developed instruments to use in his operations; many of them are still being used today. One of these techniques is the pedicle tube, in which a skin graft taken from an undamaged part of the patient’s body is sewn into a tube and used to cover the damaged area. Not only was the blood supply maintained to the skin graft, but sewing the edges of skin together meant that the skin graft was less prone to infection, a constant hazard to patients.

He delighted in sharing his skills and insights with doctors from all over the world, helping many countries to establish their skill base for this emerging field of surgery. In addition to describing his work in written form, he was the first surgeon to make pictorial records of facial reconstruction cases, both before and after surgery. In 1920 he published a book called Plastic Surgery of the Face, which detailed his work and techniques.

As weapons of war become more and more destructive, the need for reconstructive surgery increases for its casualties. But because of men like Sir Harold Gillies, these men and women can get back the face that was stolen from them.

Sharp Pointers on Infertility and Birth Control

While some couples are avoiding pregnancy and into birth control pills and expensive methods, for other couples, it is still important to have their own baby. In fact, some couples have been using the latest technology the modern medicine has been offering. According to the National Women’s Health Resource Center NWHRC, five percent of infertility treatments involve in vitro fertilization IVF or other kinds of assisted reproductive technologies. It is a method in which a laboratory is used to try to help a couple become pregnant. More than 70,000 babies have been born in the United States using assisted reproductive technologies, including 45,000 born as a result of in vitro fertilization. IVF makes pregnancy possible for more than half of the couples who pursue treatment.

Techniques like IVF made news since the 1970s, however, they are still something of an inexact or inaccurate science. The success rates for each therapy range from as low as 1 to as high as 50, and a successful pregnancy depends on a variety of factors. It can include the age of the woman, the cause of infertility, and the skill of the technician performing the procedure. One natural procedure that is still very popular today and has said to increase the chances of a woman to become pregnant.

Although modern medical science has failed to conclusively explain just how it works, acupuncture is said to help a couple have a baby. Acupuncture is based in the Chinese belief that a balance in the energy flow known as qi and chi through the body is needed in order to stay healthy. When a blockage or imbalance occurs in that flow, one’s health is negatively affected. There are 20 major pathways that qi is believed to travel along and these pathways, or meridians, are accessible through 400 different acupuncture points.
Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicines believe that a variety of energy patterns can interfere with becoming pregnant. Acupuncture works for infertility by increasing the production of endorphins in the brain, which helps people de-stress and relax. The traditional treatment can help stabilize hormone levels for the couple. This can mean increased in sperm production for men and can improve the blood supply in the uterus and the ovaries among women. Doctors believe that integrating acupuncture helps relieve some stress and anxiety that patients may face.
Acupuncture can be used in combination with other Western Medicine treatments for infertility when trying to get pregnant. Acupuncturist Jin Jin Hua claims that the 4,000-year-old practice of using hair-thin needles to penetrate and stimulate organs can work alongside IVF to create a successful pregnancy. It has a surprising success rate of sixty percent among infertile women. And there is some scientific evidence to back this up, said Ms Jin. A German study published in April 2002 showed that 42.5 percent of women who underwent acupuncture, once before and once after the transfer of the embryos in the uterus, became pregnant.
The desired effect of acupuncture is to harmonize the body and bring the body and its systems to an optimal state of wellness. In contrast, using acupuncture as birth control would run counter to those desired effects. Most acupuncturists do not have the level of mastery needed to ensure that acupuncture would be as effective as birth control pills and other traditional forms of birth control.

Why Birth Control Patches May Be More Dangerous Than Pills

Sometimes, it takes millions to convince the world of something. Other times, it could all be pushed over the edge by just a single instance. The latter is the case when discussing the decision of the Food and Drug Administration to finally legally require pharmaceutical companies to issue warning labels on their birth control patches. While there have been patients and doctors who have tried to get this to happen over the years, all it took was one case of a very real risk of death to finally get the FDA to do what many feel it should have done from the very start.

The issue stems from the risk of some of the synthetic compounds that hormone-based birth control methods release into the body can cause blood clots. These blood clots, specifically known as venous thromboembolisms VTEs, can be dangerous to people due to the damage they can do if they manage to travel to the lungs. These clots, an exceedingly rare side effect of birth control hormones, have been known to cause highly fatal pulmonary embolisms. As previously mentioned, VTEs are among the rarest if not the rarest of the possible side effects of the pill and the patch. For many years, the risk was considered to be so low and insignificant for the pill that it was largely ignored by the world. However, for those many years, the same believed to be a false assumption for the patch.

The old suspicion of the birth control patch releasing hormones more directly into the body, thereby increasing the risks of side effects, has only recently been confirmed. The blood clots in question, in particular, have been a cause of much concern over the years. Women’s groups and concerned medical professionals have noted the possible effects of the increased hormones and the higher risk of VTEs in the patches and have been trying to convince the FDA to issue orders so that an appropriate warning can be issued. However, the FDA has managed to uphold its initial ruling that the risks for the patch are as low as those for the pill, up until recently. Along with one prominent incident, a scientific study also served as the final confirmation needed for the FDA to finally take notice. Some of the more extreme elements applauded the FDA order, but believes it would be more prudent to have the birth control patches banned from the US market.

In their defense, pharmaceutical companies stated that the risks of using the patch are being drastically overplayed. They claim that the patches do not pose an increased risk for healthy females; at least, not any more than what the pill would. However, they did openly admit that certain lifestyle, genetic, and health factors could come into play to increase the risks of side effects, including the formation of VTEs. According to a number of pharmaceutical companies, these factors can include things such as smoking, alcoholism, a history of substance abuse, hormonal imbalances, and genetic abnormalities that affect the blood. They also mentioned that patients need not use the patches, and that there were plenty of birth control alternatives available to them.

In Defense of Impotent Men Everywhere

“Wanted Clear-thinking male. Attractive, successful 35-year-old woman seeks man for good times, days out, nights in, companionship. Must be intelligent and impotent.”

On October 7, 1999 a book and later, movie by Gaby Hauptmann entitled “Suche impotenten Mann frs Leben” In Search of an Impotent Man came out with an interesting premise maybe the perfect man is an impotent man. At least that’s what the protagonist of the novel, Carmen, believes. The sexy, successful thirtysomething real estate maven is tired of being ogled, pawed, and cheated on by the men in her life. By removing the sexual aspect of the relationship, it could leave room for a caring, monogamous relationship. So with the help of her friends Elvira and Laura, Carmen embarks on a crazy quest to find a sensitive, intelligent man with a good sense of humor…but he must be impotent. After posting a personal ad online, Carmen eventually meets the impotent man of her dreams David, a handsome architect with California surfer-boy looks. But when she finally gets what she thought she wanted, Carmen realizes that she wants to express her love for David in a physical manner. Laura tells Carmen,”You wanted an impotent man, and you’ve got the impotent man of your dreams and now you want to turn him into a potent superman.”

While I wasn’t very impressed with the movie, it did make me think—in real life, how can an impotent man find a partner in the sex-crazed world we live in?

Impotence, or erectile dysfunction, is a condition characterized by the repeated inability to obtain or maintain an erection. Erections are managed by two different mechanisms, the reflex and the psychogenic erection. Reflex erections are achieved by directly touching male shaft. Psychogenic erections are achieved by erotic or emotional stimuli. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by psychological issues, stress, alcohol abuse, smoking, hormonal deficiency, or diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. While there are no formal tests being done to specifically diagnose it, several tests are helpful in determining if there is an underlying medical or psychological condition causing it. When the cause is determined, the proper course of treatment will then be prescribed. Patients will have the option to take either testosterone injections, oral prescriptions, direct injections to the shaft, vacuum pumps, surgery, or in cases of psychological issues, counseling. Apart from those there are other, more unconventional treatments available, like herbal medicine, acupuncture, or experimental medicine. However, since the brain controls the libido, the placebo effect cannot be dismissed as a possible cause for the treatment’s efficacy.

It is unfortunate that men view sex and the ability to obtain an erection as an integral part of their masculinity. Thus, erectile dysfunction will cause the sufferer to feel performance anxiety every time he has sex, and the anxiety will further affect his ability to maintain the erection. Its up to their partners to ensure that their sexual relationship remains mutually satisfying regardless of the condition. One key aspect to this is improving communication between the couple. A spirit of fun and openness will go a long way to ensure that the relationship remains healthy during the toughest times.

New Spanish Consumer Guide Compares Diabetes Meds

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality recently released Pastillas para la diabetes tipo 2, a consumer guide aimed at the estimated one in eight Hispanics who take prescription drugs for diabetes. The guide provides information on how to control one’s condition and offers comparisons of various oral medications for their illness.

“This guide offers critically important information to help Hispanics who have diabetes control their disease and avoid side effects,” AHRQ Director Carolyn M. Clancy said in a prepared statement. By providing information in Spanish, she said she hopes this will help Hispanic patients become more involved in their own health care and help level the racial and ethnic disparities in health care.

The guide describes the workings and effects, good and bad, of 10 generic and 13 brand-name diabetes medications. It also warns patients of potential medication-related problems such as hypoglycemia low blood sugar, provides simple cost comparisons between each generic and brand-name diabetes medications, and lists appropriate dosages for medications being taken in combination.

The Spanish guide is based on the recent AHRQ-funded report, Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Oral Diabetes Medications for Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, which is based on scientific evidence found in 216 published studies.

Set Yourselves Free From Anxiety

A terrified young woman sits restlessly on her chair as she faces her doctor. She has the look of a frightened bird about to take flight. Her body was tensed, her head keeps turning around as she glances nervously around the room.

Her doctor asked what she was so afraid of, and the woman shrugged and told him I really don’t know. She was obsessed with the thoughts of dying among other things. I seem to have this spells ‘, she said. I was washing the dishes one day, and out of the blue, I feel so frightened, I can’t move, I was shaking and then I can’t catch my breath and next thing I knew I wanted to faint.

She pauses for a moment You think I’m crazy don’t you?. The doctor shook his head No…but I do think your are sick…you show signs of stress and anxiety and…you are suffering an anxiety over death.

It has been said that anxiety is being afraid of an unknown danger whereas fear is being afraid of a definite and specific harm. For the nervous woman inside the doctor’s office, thinking her death is near and was real enough causes her so much fear. Her therapy with the doctor in weekly intervals have helped her understood a lot of things. The root of her anxiety? She was having a hard time accepting her aging process. She becomes aware of her own mortality.

LEARNING TO LIVE WITH ANXIETY

Sometimes we are anxious over things that don’t exist. We imprison ourselves unconsciously when we ought to be free and try to enjoy life a lot more. Of course, there are real dangers of which we are afraid. These are genuine threats to our security and stability like emotional and physical problems. To feel anxious and in need of professional help doesn’t mean that we are crazy. In today’s hectic world, all of us have good reasons to react to events. Events like global warming, terrorist attacks, tsunami and add to that, situations that we have to deal with our own personal lives.

From time to time, it is alright to have legitimate feelings of depression and anxiety. And if things can really go out of hand, a psychiatrist, psychologist, and counselors well-trained enough can provide the kind of help you need. But even with professional help, you must also do your part, you need to get busy and make use of what ever talents you have and not dwell on you melancholic moods.

With the proper perspective you can get out of your obstacles and find the way out being trap in the cycle of anxiety. Most often, people are anxious because they are mostly stuck in the past than living in the present. It is not just plain nostalgia but it seems their present situation is not the way they wanted to be. Dissatisfaction and the tendency of past failures and guilt dominates us and changes our personalities. In addition, to much preoccupation of the future robs us also of our joy. We worry too much on what lies ahead.

ACCEPT AND LET GO

We deny and we don’t learn to accept our imperfections. We hated ourselves…how we looked and how others perceived us. A lot of people doesn’t even like the sound of their voice while others can be downright embarrassed if they are fat and too skinny. We let this illusion of beauty, wealth and success on which we get from magazines, TV and even the Internet be the source of our misery as we constantly compare ourselves to others. It is only through acceptance and letting go if things which is external is one way of lessening our anxiety panic attacks.

Another clue to overcoming our anxieties is to know that we are not alone in our fears and worries. Anxiety is often an introspective activity and it thrives on isolation. But we don’t have to be alone. We are not strange and inferior. The moment you learn to accept who and what you are is also the time that you will discover that you are not set apart from everybody else.

Anxiety is a normal thing and that everyone goes through with life with it. However, it also doesn’t mean our anxieties will go away and never come back.

But the bottom line is, we need to control it and not let it dominate our own lives. There would be trouble, there would be pain, there would be sorrow but we can survive. Learn to let go and try to be free.
