Building Blocks For Bone Health Registered Dietitian Shares Her Top Bone Health Essentials

On average, the human body is made up of 206 bones and cartilage that support and shape the body. Living bone is fragile, and when it’s not cared for, osteoporosis can develop and cause increased susceptibility to fractures. According to the Surgeon General, half of all Americans over 50 are expected to suffer or be at risk for osteoporosis.

Fortunately, there are proactive measures people can take to strengthen bones and help prevent osteoporosis. “Calcium along with diet and exercise are the building blocks for strong, healthy bones, but they’re not enough,” said Los Angeles-based registered dietitian, Carroll Reider. “It’s also important to go beyond calcium alone and incorporate other key nutrients into the diet.”

Reider’s top five bone-building nutrients are

&8226; Calcium helps build and maintain good bone health. And, as part of a healthy diet, adequate calcium intake helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

&8226; Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium. Vitamin D is essential for the normal development and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones.

&8226; Vitamin K plays an essential role within two important proteins found in all bones.

&8226; Phosphorous is found naturally in the body, with approximately 85 percent being in the bones. Like calcium, phosphorus is an important mineral for bone health.

&8226; B vitamins are important to bone health as they help regulate homocysteine levels. Some studies have shown that high homocysteine levels have a negative effect on bone health.

Other nutrients Reider highlights as bone helpers include vitamin E, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, boron and vitamin C. “It’s best to try to get these nutrients from your diet alone, but that’s not always the easiest thing to do,” said Reider.

To ensure you’re getting all your bone health essentials, Reider recommends incorporating a specialty bone strengthener, such as Nature Made OsteoRenew Ultra into your daily routine. A comparison of bone health supplements at drugstores found OsteoRenew Ultra to be the complete nonprescription bone strengthener. With more bone-fortifying nutrients than any other leading brand, the ingredients in OsteoRenew Ultra’s unique formula have been proven to support bone health in more than 30 clinical studies.

Mangosteen can help fight free radicals in the body

Mangosteen has been a big word in the herbal supplement arena for quite some time the reason for this is the xanthone flavonoids and other compounds found in Mangosteen The xanthone flavonoids and other compounds in Mangosteen fruit are responsible for its high level of antioxidant activity. In vitro tests have been conducted on XanoMaxtm Mangosteen 10 extract to determine the level of free radical scavenging ability in both watery and fatty environments. A major test recognized as the industry standard for measuring antioxidant activity is known as the ORAC Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity assay. The ORAC test is an in vitro assay that works by measuring the amount of free radical damage done to a fluorescent probe measured by a change in probe intensity. Antioxidants lessen the damage to the probe fluorescence, which indicates a reduction in free radical damage. This measure is used to quantify the antioxidant’s or combination of antioxidants capacity to quench free radicals. This quantification is known as the total ORAC value. The total ORAC value provides a relative measure of total antioxidant strength of any substance, allowing for comparison of different mixtures. A high ORAC value corresponds to a high total in vitro antioxidant capacity. The development of the ORAC test has led to a number of commonly eaten foods being assessed in terms of total ORAC scores per serving. Similarly, particular combinations of antioxidants, such as those in nutritional formulas, can also be assessed for their total ORAC scores. This has led to the ability to determine the potential usefulness of a particular supplement in increasing overall antioxidant capacity. When XanoMaxtm Mangosteen 10 extract was tested for ORAC value, the resulting antioxidant potential was over 3,500 ORAC units per gram of extract. This result is extremely high. ORAC values of compounds vary with their nutrient concentration, moisture content and other factors. For comparison purposes, whole blueberries, considered to be a rich source of antioxidants, had an ORAC value of 61 units per gram, while pomegranate tested at 105 ORAC units per gram.1 XanoMaxtm Mangosteen extract scoring at 3,500 ORAC units is a potentially rich source of beneficial antioxidants to the body. Free radicals are produced every day in the human body and an over abundance of free radicals can damage cells. If enough cells get damaged one can get cancer, organ damage and pre mature aging. Some say that free radicals speed up the aging process and taking supplements that have a high ORAC can help slow down the aging process and help us look younger and live longer. There are many vitamins and herbs on the market today that help fight free radical damage in the body, Mangosteen just happens to have one of the highest ORAC value for your money, give it a try and see how you feel. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

The Niacin Rush

Your face turns flush and your skin starts to itch. Your heart begins to beat faster. The itching may be felt all across your face and extend down your arms to your fingertips.

What is going on? If you’re like me you forgot what you learned in school and had to call ask-a-nurse to be reminded.

You may have taken a little too much niacin, or vitamin B-3. It’s ok, you’ll be fine, it will probably wear off in about half an hour.

But it can really make you scared if you don’t know what is going on.

What happened? I took a niacin supplement plus brewer’s yeast which itself contains lots of niacin. That was nine years ago but I still remember it like yesterday.

Niacin, also known as nicotinic acid is very necessary for your body. Niacin is needed at the cellular level. It is an important nutrient in cellular processes that create the ultimate energy currency of your body – ATP or Adenosine Triphosphate.

A deficiency in niacin can lead to pellagra, which has a number of manifestations. An inflamed tongue and irritated gastric track and colon as well as depression and hard rough skin are just some of the symptoms of this deficiency disease.

Anxiety and hallucinations are also possible symptoms of pellagra. Wide spread pellagra is no longer seen in the United States, though individual cases can still occur.

Dermatitis, dementia and diarrhea are considered the 3 Ds or the classic symptoms of pellagra.

Diets rich in meats, eggs and milk provide adequate amounts of niacin to the body. Alcoholics and diabetics are at greater risk for being deficient in niacin.

Niacin is a vitamin, it is necessary to the body for cellular processes.

Oral supplementation can reverse the less severe cases of deficiency. In severe cases there may be permanent consequences.

So the next time your face flushes and you get an itching burning sensation down to your fingertips, take a moment to reflect before you panic. Did you have too much niacin?

This article is for information purposes only. If you have or think you have a health condition, consult your physician for proper diagnoses and treatment.

Resveratrol Capsules Tiny Ounces of Health!

In an effort to discover the therapeutic effects of diverse plants, scientists have started to isolate different substances thought to be benefic. One of the examples that can be given is represented by Polygonum Cuspidatum, from which Resveratrol 3, 5, 4- trihydroxystilbene was isolated and taken for extensive research. Today, that substance is known extremely well and it appears to be more beneficial than anyone could ever imagine. Available over the Internet, Resveratrol is a constitutive element of red wine and in studies, has shown that one of its most powerful effects is the protection offered for the cardiovascular system.

From the moment when it was isolated and up to the present time, many discoveries have been made about and its effects. Studies have been performed on mice and the findings were more than satisfactory. It seems that a high Resveratrol dose has amazing effects, not only cardio protective but also inhibits tumor growth Resveratrol supplements have been considered for their chemo preventive action in studies and even increases the lifespan of lab rats. All these effects have been observed in the studies made on , and has been made available now on the Internet in the form of health supplements.

As everyone knows, a large percent of the studies made on mice have provided answers to treatments that can be performed or given to humans. Resveratrol capsules contain a high dosage of Trans-Resveratrol that may offer all the effects presented above and even some that are still being studied. The Resveratrol molecule is known to reduce inflammation caused by immune mechanisms in affections such as psoriasis and Chrons disease, representing much more effective alternatives than other options considered. Also, the same Trans-Resveratrol in the herbal capsules is known to reduce the stress levels in rodents and thus, protect the organism from further disease.

If you are interested in Resveratrol, make sure that you read some of the conclusions presented by the studies made and also what the recommended doses compare against those doses given in studies. Dont be scared if the doses recommended are high as they need to be that way in order for the substance to be as efficient as possible. Try the 1000 mg Resveratrol capsule with Trans-Resveratrol from natural herbs and you will definitely be impressed with the results. They represent exactly the kind of new dietary health supplements that can positively produce results. In studies, Resveratrol shows that it protects the heart but also your circulatory system, reducing the risk of vascular attack. It is a well known fact that much of the ischemic and vascular attacks are caused by increased stress. Resveratrol allows the body to respond better to stress even though the mechanisms by which this substance acts have not been completely elucidated.

As a final conclusion, there are three things one must understand about . First, it appears to require higher doses than one can get from wine in order to have improved beneficial effects. Second, it is 100 safe and in studies, has an effect on a wide variety of illnesses inflammatory, cancerous and age-related such as Alzheimer. Last, but not least it represents a natural herbal supplement, which is an incredible natural advantage over a hard drug. It can be taken by those interested in dietary regimes, in capsules of 500 or 300 mg. Just make sure that you do not give Resveratrol supplements to children under the age of 18, as the studies on child development are still not conclusive. Other from that, feel free to take advantage of all the potentially amazing benefits brought on by the Resveratrol herbal capsules!

About Vitamins – Everything you need to know!

Learning about vitamins can be confusing, especially when you are trying to figure out just what type of supplements you should be taking. Weve all been told at one time or another, that if we ate a nutritionally balanced meal three times a day we wouldnt need dietary supplements or need to know about vitamins, but of course, this just isnt realistic in our society.

A huge number of us are stressed out on a routine basis, and dont always have time to eat at all let alone a nutritionally balanced meal and three of them?!. Vitamins should never be substituted for good nutritional intake. Your body needs fuel to accomplish all the tasks you have to attend to in a day. A good diet is one with plenty of calcium, protein, fats, carbohydrates, and fiber supplemented by vitamins as needed for specific health concerns.

Many food items are enriched with vitamins and minerals, like breads, pastas, and cereals. Information about vitamins listed on packaging includes the percentage of the daily recommended allowance of each, which will give you a pretty good idea how much you are getting of a certain vitamin or mineral. Calcium is an important mineral for women, and most sources about vitamins state that women should consume at least 1200-1500 mg of calcium daily. Most calcium supplements only contain 30-50 of the recommended daily amounts and must be supplemented by diet intake of other sources, such as cheese, yogurt, milk, and ice cream. About vitamin D, this is an important vitamin and is essential to bone health, and is included in some calcium supplements as well. Vitamin D can be absorbed through the skin via sunlight as well, but for people living in northern states, or for the elderly, this is not always an option, therefore a vitamin supplement is the answer.

Part of taking care of yourself is learning about vitamins and minerals that our bodies require for optimal health. Many sources are available to you to learn more about vitamins and how certain vitamin deficiencies as well as excess intake can be detrimental to your health. Its important to take an active role in your health, and be knowledgeable about vitamins in your cabinet and which are right for you. In addition to searching on the web, you can find an abundance of information about vitamins in various health publications, or you can even consult a nutritionist or naturopathic physician for advice about vitamins and supplements, and how you can implement them into your diet. Heres to your good health!

Making Vitamins Plain And Simple

It’s no wonder we are pretty confused when shopping for vitamins. We’ve been told, for example, that a good vitamin supplement would boost our energy level. In fact, we’re told this constantly in magazine arti- cles, television media, the plethora of vitamin- promoting infomercials, web sites, and pop-up ads on the Internet.

So when you arrive at the vitamin shop, you’re already at a complete loss and may have forgotten altogether why you’re even there, and end up like many of us, just not taking any vitamins at all because it’s all so…so…confusing!

Vitamin World, Vitamin Gallery, The Vitamin Patch, Vitamins for Vegeterians — the vast array of shops, whether online or in your neighborhood, all beckon, promising renewed everything. If you have any health problem or complaint known to man, you’ll find a good vitamin supplement or 12 to 15 of them to straight- en out your suffering right away.

The good thing about vitamins just one of many is that they’re really largely “natural,” with very few containing harmful or otherwise irritating, toxic chemicals.

To put it plainly, vitamins are good for us because they are derived largely from natural plants and min- erals. That’s the basic fact. And the benfits are many; it’s difficult to take the “wrong” vitamin, and it certainly can’t hurt you, so why not give it a swing? But remember Take everything in moderation.

Beta-carotene, for example, is thought to protect against cancer and heart disease. It can dramatically boost the immune system and is a powerful antioxidant, which controls those “free radicals” we’ve all heard about and prevents them from causing damage to cells that lead to premature disease and aging.

Biotin metabolizes protein, fats, and carbohydrates. It also helps in energy production, and there is some proof that it can help people with diabetes by keeping glucose levels reduced. Other benefits include healthy hair, skin and nails, and reducing fatigue, heartburn and some allergies.

Folic acid is famous among women who are trying to conceive and those already pregnant. Other benefits include keeping your heart strong, increasing energy and helping ward off Alzheimers disease.

Vitamins and minerals are now seroiusly recognized in playing a role in the health and vitality of every organ in the body, from skin and bones to the nervous and immune systems, right up to the brain. Vitamins can lower cholesterol levels, help wounds heal more, raise your sperm count and make you more resistant to colds and flu, asthma, cataracts, and even gum dis-ease.

Again, you really can’t go wrong with vitamins. Look beyond the fancy marketing and packaging. The key is to focus on your particular ailment and go straight to the natural remedy. Don’t let all the hype distract or confuse you; all you really need to do is keep it plain and simple.

Natural Supplements for Women’s Health Metabolism

Heres a test define metabolism. Go ahead, what is it? If you said its how fast you burn calories, youre partially right. Your metabolic rate does determine the number of calories your body burns. But your metabolism governs more than just your metabolic rate. It also keeps everything in balance like your blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. nutraOrigin, makers of high quality vitamins for women, shares the secrets of supporting a healthy metabolism.

When metabolism goes wrong

In ideal circumstances, your metabolism works like a well-oiled machine. You eat energy in the form of food. The body breaks the food down into sugar. The sugar is transported out of the blood and into the cells by the hormone insulin. Simple.

But most of us dont lead ideal lives. We tend to eat diets high in simple carbohydrates like bread, rice, and pastries, which cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. In response, the pancreas secretes loads of insulin. Thats okay occasionally, but when we consistently eat simple carbs, so much insulin is flooded into the system that we can eventually become resistant to it. In fact, one in five Americans suffers from insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes and metabolic syndrome both of which increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. Thats why its important to learn how to lower blood sugar.

Balance your blood sugar

There are a number of things you can do to support normal blood sugar levels. Exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet top the list. But natural supplements, such as nutraOrigins Glycemic Balance, can also help. Glycemic Balance addresses all three critical aspects of blood sugar balance. First, it increases your bodys sensitivity to insulin, with chromium, cinnamon, and ECGC from green tea. Second, it imitates the effects of insulin with the mineral vanadium. And third, it ignites glucose metabolism, with a high-potency dose of biotin.

When you balance your blood sugar, youre investing in your long-term health. But you also get short-term benefits, like higher energy levels and an easier time losing weight.

Love your heart

If youre resistant to insulin, chances are its putting a strain on your heart. Thats why any program aimed at supporting optimal metabolism will also address cardiovascular health.

nutraOrigins CardioBalance supplement supports your metabolism in keeping your cholesterol levels healthy. It features policosanol, a 100 natural ingredient derived from sugar cane wax, which is backed by multiple scientific studies. Policosanol also protects your heart, veins and arteries, and supports a regular heart rhythm.

Give yourself a good foundation

Your body can survive even the most nutritionally deficient diet. But for your metabolism to really thrive, it needs a multitude of vitamins and minerals in just the right quantities. Unfortunately, those are hard to get from diet alone. nutraOrigin developed Nutra Multi, a high-quality multivitamin and mineral, to cover your nutritional bases, keep your metabolism humming, and protect your heart with double-strength folic acid.

The experts at nutraOrigin recommend taking all three formulas together for maximum synergistic effect.

Wheatgrass And Linseed Their Healings Powers

In today’s polluted society is very taxing on the body. While the body benefits exceptionally from fruit and vegetables, to cope with all the chemicals around us the body needs specific supplements.

Most supplements turn into very expensive urine. This is a very important point. Carbon dioxide, exhaust fumes, putrid invisible gases and boron a chemical that leaks into buildings from bricks poison our bodies on a daily basis. We need extra support to counter this.

Want to know how to counteract all the wastes the body has to take in? Chlorophyll is the substance that causes the green coloration in plants and vegetables. It is similar to hemoglobin in the blood except for one molecule. Green vegetables, especially leafy greens, shoot the highest energetic nutrients into the body.

There is one supplement that has high concentrated source of chlorophyll. This supplement also contains Vitamins A, C, E, K and B including B12 and B17 these two are particularly significant because it’s been suggested that it’s not easy to get vitamin B12 on a vegetarian diet. B17 is significant because of the latest research that suggests possible benefits it provides on specific types of cancers. It also contains every single known mineral, in organic form on Day 2 we talked about the importance of getting organic minerals. That’s every single known mineral needed by the body. Some of these are extremely hard to get. It also has every known trace mineral. A true phenomenon. It considered a wonder food. It is tasteless in a glass of fruit juice. It’s much better than its name suggests. This is Wheatgrass. Dont be mistaken, this is far different from wheat the most important point is that Wheatgrass does not contain gluten.

Have you ever seen or come across the latest craze for Omega 3 Fats? They are also known as Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids. If you havent seen it yet, you will very soon. Many scientists are linking them with everything your body needs, everything from weight loss to skin shine. One challenge is that the body cant store Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Omega 3 is made from a substance called ALA alpha-lipoic acid. ALA can be stored by the body. Linseed is packed full of ALA, or basically the building blocks of essential good fats. These fats are good fats, as opposed to the excess weight which comes from bad fats. Scientists are now finding that good fats will push out bad fats from the body. Linseed is not green; however it’s very powerful, so we’ve included it here.

Remember you get most of your nutrients from fruits and vegetables.

Yerba Mate The Powerhouse Nutrient For Healing, Anti-Aging and Enhanced Health

Many think of Yerba Mate as a tea beverage. While the chemical components are quite similar to green tea, it is in fact far more nutritious, because scientific study has shown it to contain nearly all of the necessary life-sustaining vitamins, minerals and nutrients. It has been found to be loaded with an even richer and more potent array of antioxidants than green tea.

Yerba Mate, a popular South American beverage, is brewed from the dried leaves and stemlets of the small evergreen Yerba Mate tree found in the highlands of Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. Tea comes from a different plant altogether. So while Yerba Mate is similar in chemical structure to tea, it is a completely different beverage altogether.

The Guarani Indians of Paraguay and Uruguay have long been drinking this beverage, and introduced it into modern civilization. It is now consumed by millions of South Americans every day, as a healthy and beneficial energizing coffee alternative.

Yerba Mate contains 52 more known active chemical compounds than green tea. It is loaded with potent phytochemical antioxidants, and in far greater quantities than in green tea. Like green tea, it has anti-cancer and anti-aging benefits, again, in higher quantities.

This amazing plant has an incredibly rich nutritional profile. It provides Vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, Niacin, B5, B Complex, Calcium, Chromium, Manganese, Iron, Selenium, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Carotene, Fatty Acids, Chlorophyll, Flavonols, Polyphenols, Inositol, Trace Minerals, Antioxidants, Tannins, Pantothenic Acid and even Amino Acids. Scientists are saying it is quite likely that it contains more powerful nutrients that are yet unknown and undiscovered.

There are so many incredible benefits attributed to Yerba Mate, both from scientific studies and centuries of observation. Some of these benefits include

- anti-aging
- boosts immunity
- increases mental clarity
- helps with digestive problems
- improvement in general well-being, mood, and sleep
- helps to lose weight
- cleanses and detoxifies the blood
- increases supply of oxygen to the heart
- supplies many nutrients needed by the heart for growth and repair
- reduces stress
- reduces the effect of debilitating disease
- allergy relief
- firmer and smoother skintone

Experiencers of digestive problems such as constipation and hemorrhoids have found these to be relieved and easily overcome over a short period of daily use. Some people who require antacids have reported they no longer need to use them after a short time of using Yerba Mate.

People with heart problems have reported clogged arteries clearing up in even just 3 weeks of using Yerba Mate – their doctors have ordered them to stop taking their pills for circulation and clogged arteries.

It has even been used as a food substitute due to its rich nutritional profile. It will eliminate feelings of hunger and give the sensation of having had a full meal. While this is important for those experiencing conditions of famine, it is also helpful for people desiring to lose weight.

There are far too many benefits to go into detail in the space of this article. This is a very powerful healing plant. Because of its vast amount of health benefits for the whole body, Yerba Mate is truly a tonic for wellness.

In addition, essential vitamins and nutrients are best absorbed by the body when taken in their live, natural state. This is why it is far more efficient to use a liquid nutrient like Yerba Mate instead of a multivitamin supplement.

Yerba Mate is one of the most excellent nutrients available in the world today, and should be given the attention of all who are interested in excellent health, anti-aging, wellness, and healing.

Know Your Bodybuilding Supplement – Tribulus

Tribulus terrestris is a herb that comes from a plant found in Asia. It has been used in the past by many cultures for the treatment of liver, kidney and cardiovascular diseases. It has also been used as a diuretic and to treat infertility. In recent years strength athletes in eastern Europe are reputed to have used it to enhance performance.

It is believed to enhance testosterone levels by encouraging the production of lutenizing hormone. Studies have shown that when lutenizing hormone levels are increased, the natural production of testosterone also increases.

It is difficult to assess the validity of tribulus as a muscle growth enhancer because none of the studies carried out have appeared in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Its proponents do suggest that it can prove useful when stacked with 100 mg of DHEA and 100 mg of androstenedione but this takes us into the equally uncertain territory of prohormones which we have covered in a separate article.

If you do wish to experiment with tribulus you can take 750-1250 mg per day divided between meals. Some people experience stomach upsets but this can be minimized by taking it with food. There’s no guarantee that tribulus terrestris will help you grow bigger muscles but many users report a much improved sex drive!
