Does the protien diet work?

Of course, when it comes to healthy eating, there are plenty of alternative diets that people want to claim are healthier than the traditional calorie counting method. They are usually motivated by a desire to sell a book or a food range, but some people swear by these methods.

The most famous diet lately has been the Atkins diet and its many copycats the South Beach diet, GI, and the rest. These are basically high-protein diets that tell you carbohydrate carbs are evil, and you should cut right down on them or even cut them out of your diet completely. While nutritionists are incredulous that anyone would seriously consider cutting an entire food group out of their diets, the books have sold in the millions.

The dirty little secret of protein diets is that they do help you lose weight, but only in the short term. They do this by causing you to give yourself a disease called ketosis, caused by lack of carbohydrate, that makes you lose weight, feel bad and have terrible breath. As soon as you go off the diet and back to your old ways, however, you will simply put all your weight back on again.

It is a similar situation with many other diets, including weight loss milkshakes, which rarely contain anything resembling a balanced meal. Instead, they flood your body with protein and little else, forcing it to burn fat but again, the effect quickly wears off if you stop using the shakes.

A cynic might say that theyre not really trying to help you lose weight or eat healthily, so much as they are trying to keep you on their dodgy diets forever. If you want to eat healthily, stick to balance no matter what anyone tells you, thats never going to change.

Harmful Chemicals in the Meat You Eat?

Many people may not realize it, but much of the meat we eat contains synthetic growth hormones and other chemicals that may be harmful to us. Why would cattle owners want to use growth hormones? It is all about money. Ranchers today want to produce more cattle in a shorter period. A rancher may only have about 14 months to get the calf from a small size, say 80 pounds, to a selling size around 1,200 pounds. Growth hormones help the cattle put on weight to get them ready for slaughter in record time as well as reducing the amount of fat in the meat. Nitrates are a chemical compound that can also be found in meat today, being used to cure meat and give them a healthy color. Most notably, nitrates are found in hotdogs, giving them their red color.

The use of hormones in meat is nothing new. As far back as the 1930s, research shows that estrogen affected the growth rates in both cattle and poultry. By the 1950s, a synthetic man made estrogen, DES, was being used to increase cattle size. However, DES was found to cause cancer and is no longer used to “fatten” up cattle and chickens.

The Food and Drug Administration FDA current approves of five different types of hormones used in food production. Of these, testosterone and progesterone are produced naturally by the animals and zeranol and trenbolone acetate are synthetically made. These hormones are approved for use only in cattle and sheep. Poultry, such as chickens and turkeys, and pigs do not gain much weight when given these hormones, so they are not given them. Most of these hormones are given to the animal by inserting a pellet under the skin of the ear. The pellet releases the hormone and the ears of the animals are thrown away during slaughtered.

The concern of scientist and consumers both is that traces of the hormones and chemicals will remain in the meat and pose a potential hazard to humans who consume it. Have you noticed that girls today seem to be reaching puberty at a younger age? It is suspected that this may be due to the steroids found in today’s meat. Unfortunately, studies done on the potentially harmful ingredients in meat have proved inconclusive and further studies are needed. One problem when conducting a study is that the animals produce some of the hormones naturally, therefore making it hard to determine how much is natural versus the pellet hormones. Also, the level of hormones produced naturally varies from animal to animal, another hurdle for researchers to overcome. The concern with nitrates, used to cure meats and give them a pink or red color, is that they can be converted into nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are believed to both cause and promote cancer. However, the FDA has no studies that decisively finds nitrates used in meats harmful, therefore continue to allow them to be used in processed foods.

What should you as a consumer do? One thing you can do is purchase organic meat. Organic meat comes from livestock raised without hormones or steroids. Also, the cattle are fed grains with no pesticides involved. In 2002, the United States Department of Agriculture developed a system whereas all organic foods including meat would be labeled as such. So when shopping, you should see a label on organic meat that signifies that it contains at least 95 organic ingredients. Some grocery stores carry organic meat, but if not, you may have to visit a butcher shop or health food store to find it. You can even buy organic meat through the Internet and have it delivered to your home. However, if you decided to purchase meat online, you may want to first order a small amount. That way, you can determine if it meets all your specifications for delivery time, freshness, etc. before buying a larger quantity.

As ranchers strive to find ways to get more cattle to slaughter faster, consumers will continue to be concerned in the methods they are using to do it. Until more research is done, the best thing you can do it try to be aware of all the dangers out there by staying abreast of the current research being done on cattle hormones and chemicals used in processing meats, and purchase organic meat for your family.

A Nutritious Diet while Traveling

Sticking to a nutritious diet while traveling can be one of the more difficult things to do. However, if you learn how to make smart choices, a healthy diet is really not that difficult. Its probably not the best time in which to start a healthy diet, but if you are currently making healthy choices in your foods already, modifying your diet slightly to accommodate travel, is not as difficult as it first may seem.

If you are traveling by airplane, your diet may have to include airplane food, which can often be of poor nutritional value, depending on the selection. When you book your flight, ask about your food options, ask if a vegetarian dish is available? Vegetarian dishes are sometimes more nutritional in this case, but it really depends on what they may be serving. If you can, eat a larger meal before your flight, so that you dont have to eat the entire meal that is served, to feel full.

When driving or taking a bus, you may be tempted to stop at fast food restaurants and eat the meals found there. Avoid this whenever possible! If youre on vacation, you may wish to splurge a tiny bit, but having fast food more than once during a week can really be bad for your health. If you must, choose the healthiest options available, like chicken breasts and diet soda.

Also, remember that you can take your own meals when traveling. Carrying a loaf of whole-wheat bread or pita wraps, some lean lunchmeat, and low-fat cheese in a cooler is a great way to avoid high-fat and high-cholesterol junk food meals. These are much better choices and youll save a lot of money as well. Call ahead to ask if there will be a refrigerator in your hotel room.

Lastly, make smart choices when you eat out. If you choose salads or pasta get the dressing on the side and ask about low-carb options. In fact, many places print these dieting options directly in the menu for the health-conscious people. Control your portions by ordering lunch menu sizes or splitting the meal in have and getting a doggie bag, and youll be well on your way to healthy eating, even away from home.

Yes, eating healthy foods when you travel can be a challenge. However, your health is worth it. Eating meals high in nutrition will also assist in fighting illnesses that you are likely to encounter when traveling and you will find yourself more alert so that you can enjoy your trip.

Chew on This Not Your Everyday Sweetener

Raise your hand if you have a sweet tooth? Oh cmon, I know you do. My hand definitely shoots right up. I love sugar in its fullest, from cereals to candy and chewing gum, I pass my daily dosage of sugar early in the morning. Why is it we love sugar so much? Our taste buds are so accustomed to the sweet tastes that we drop on them all the time that regular food is downright boring to the palate. We owe much of this to our excessive sugar intake, but we can do something to curb and, maybe even, replace the extra intake of sugar. There are plenty of sugar substitutes that can help bring us a healthier and more balanced diet.

Sweeteners can be used to liven up our food and give us the sugar fix were looking for without actually having sugar. In the past, artificial sweeteners have been the main source to use as sugar substitutes but many have not been able to mimic the taste of sugar. These artificial sweeteners cannot be used for baking and do not have the same feel or texture as sugar. For that and many other reasons, we quickly give into our sugar cravings and go back to the real thing. The most commonly used sweeteners are saccharin and aspartame. These have been sufficient for many people, but we continue to seek for better alternatives that taste just like our sugar friend.

Xylitol is a naturally occurring substitute that many people do not know about. It looks and tastes just like sugar but doesnt carry the unhealthy side effects such as tooth decay and cavities that come from excessive amounts of sugar. Its healthier for us and is an easier way for us to cut back on calories and will help satiate the sugar cravings we all get. Xylitol can be used to bake all your favorite foods and is in crystalline form just how we are used to sugar.

Sugar is a huge part of many of our lives, but causes problems when eaten too much. Diabetes in kids is a growing problem and is partly due to eating too many sugary foods and a lack of exercise. Weight gain among children and adults can be attributed to sugary and fatty foods. Sugar poses a problem for all, but if consumed in proper doses, then it is not bad for us at all.

Other than Xylitol, there are many other natural sweeteners we can turn to that will give us the sugar we need. Honey, fruit juices, maple syrup, and fructose are other alternatives that many use to substitute for regular sugar. Natural sweeteners are a healthy alternative to regular sugar. Remember that consumption is the key. Any food, including sugar, consumed in moderate amounts is not harmful.

So its up to each person to take care of their body and watch the amounts of sugar eaten. Sugar is in most foods and thats why we like to eat so much. We can be responsible in the amount of sugar that we consume and have artificial or natural sweeteners if desired.

Herbal Nutrition Supplements

Herbal nutrition supplements the Alternative to hormone replacement therapy
Hair loss is a genetichormonal process that can affect both men and women. Hormones that bind to hair follicles can cause an imbalance in the biological processes that cause hair growth. Eventually, excess hormonal action on the follicle causes hair to stop growing and the follicle dies.

Hormones govern the growth of hair. In men, the male hormone, testosterone, governs beard, body hair and hair in the armpits. In women, estrogen, the female hormone generally prevents hair growth on the chin and encourages it to grow on the head. Occasionally, women develop signs of hair loss or baldness when estrogen levels drop.

This patterned form of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia. This term means hair loss caused by sensitivity to male hormones which exist in both men and women. DHT Dihydrotestosterone is one of the main enemies in the war on hair loss in women.

DHT is a potent form of testosterone and acts on hair follicles via androgen receptors. DHT has a disastrous effect on the scalp hair follicles so they begin to shut down and the hair eventually falls out. DHT can also cause the hair follicles to produce sebum. Sebum is a fatty substance secreted from the sebaceous glands most of which open into hair follicles.

DHT is the natural metabolite which is produced due to action of two enzymes 5 alpha reductase type I and II. The number and distribution of androgen receptors in the hair follicles, the enzymes 5 alpha reductase type I and II, and the local concentrations of dihyrotestosterone around hair follicles are the factors which are responsible for male androgenetic alopecia It is presumed that in women there are additional factors which come into play such as the concentration of Cytochrome P-450-aromatase near hair follicles as well as the distribution of androgen receptor proteins. The cytochrome enzyme metabolizes androgens to estrogens, and modifies the ratio of androgens to estrogens by having a protective role by antagonizing the effects of androgens.

Differing concentrations of androgen metabolizing enzymes and androgen receptors have been identified in hair follicles from women compared to men. The concentration of Cytochrome P-450-aromatase is six times higher in women’s frontal hair follicles compared to men’s frontal hair follicles. Women also have around 3 times less alpha-5-reductase type I or type II enzyme in their frontal hair follicles compared to men. Conversely, androgen receptor content in frontal hair conversely, androgen receptor content in frontal hair follicles from men are 40 higher than for hair follicles from women. These differences between men and women most likely account for the overt clinical differences for women pattern balding.

Many women in their 40s now take hormone replacement therapy as an option to treat pattern baldness. Besides the hormone replacement therapy there are there are many herbal nutrition supplements

What determines your biological ‘age’?

Our parents precondition us from a young age to believe that we’ll live to a certain age. We walk around with a particular notion in our subconscious that we have a pre-defined lifespan of between 60-90 years. But there is no definitive speed at which a person should gracefully age because we are all so different. Some people seem to look and act eternally young – ageless, wrinkleless! Others, less fortunate, look old beyond their years. Our body’s biological age is a reflection of our physical, mental and spiritual journey through life. In perfect conditions, our bodies can survive to an age of 125 years! Look at the two very different lists below, the potential for ageing becomes quite obvious when you compare such a stark difference in lifestyle.

Your Obese Child & School Nutrition

Good Nutrition in School Can Help to Fight Childhood Obesity

Perhaps you are trying to help your child lose weight, or you feel he or she may be in danger of becoming overweight or unhealthy because of their eating and exercise habits.

If so, it is important that you consider the impact of your childs time at school as you think about what you need to change.

As the U.S. government has studied obesity, many of their agencies have produced reports and established guidelines to help parents and school systems understand how to make important changes.

These guidelines are designed to encourage our children to eat healthy foods and get plenty of exercise.

Across the country, schools are beginning to offer more good food choices, and look at their physical education and extra curricular activities to ensure that they encourage good habits.

Of course your involvement and understanding is important if your child is going to get the right support while she or he is in school during the day.

And, you need to ensure that your child understands the importance of CHOOSING the healthy foods and participating in exercise programs, but the first step is to make sure these choices are AVAILABLE to your child.

Working with medical organizations, the USDA published a Prescription for Change, and Healthy School Nutrition Environments.

These reports were meant to be used by schools to improve their nutritional program.

Here are some of the recommendations included in those reports.

The Serving and Dining Environment
The Federal, State and local government must provide adequate funding for food and eating environs to support healthy eating.

Dining space will be adequate, pleasant and socially accommodating, and will accommodate all students and staff scheduled to eat at a certain time of day.

Serving areas will be sufficient to ensure that every student has access to meals with a minimum of waiting time, so that they have plenty of time to eat before their next class.

The staff and administration of the school, AND the students and parents will analyze the current environment, working together to create a space that matches the needs of all parties.

Nutritional Concerns Regarding Meals and Foods

Meals should comply with USDA nutritional standards and guidelines, and students should have plenty of food choices, with new foods introduced to keep the menu interesting and healthy.

Food preparation and preferences should be varied enough to comply with various tastes and ethnic preferences or religious requirements.

Additional food and drink offered, over and above meals served, e.g. vending machines and packaged snacks, will represent the 5 major food groups in the Food Guide Pyramid.

Students must have designated lunch periods, long enough for them to get their food and eat at a healthy pace.

Lunch periods should be as close to the middle of the day as possible and should allow time for socialization and a relaxed eating pace.

All decisions made by the school system regarding the type, variety and quantity of food and drink to be sold in the school will be based on nutritional goals and sound guidelines, NOT on the profit the school can make.

Nutrition and Health Focused Curriculum

Kindergarten through Grade 12 classes should include education and information on healthy eating habits and the types of foods a child should eat to stay healthy and help them grow.

Now that you understand the concerns and recommendations of the USDA and the national medical organizations, go to a school board meeting and talk to the board members about what they are doing to comply with these guidelines.

If you dont know what your childs eating environment and food choices are, visit the school and find out. Get involved with the PTA or PTO in your school system and get to work!

What Is an Essential Fat?

You may have heard that essential fats are an important aspect to maintaining the health of your body. But what exactly are they?

Basically, there are two truly essential fatty acids, Linoleic and Linolenic. You may have heard of these referred to as Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids.

So, why are they called essential? The term essential in the life sciences refers to the fact that a nutrient cannot be synthesized by the body. Thus, you must have a dietary or supplemental source to supply your need for these acids.

You probably heard of the 8 essential amino acids. It’s the same idea here but in this case we are referring to fatty acids rather than an amino acid.

These fatty acids exist in and are used in every cell of your body. So they are crucial to a cell’s health and therefore to our health as people. The good news is that in North America, you generally get enough Omega -6 in your diet. Omega-3 has presented a question mark to researchers. Are we getting enough or not?

Fortunately, you can get Omega-3 from fish and certain nut oils. If you have any doubt at all, you can get Omega three from flax oil, which is in abundant supply at your local health food store.

Don’t let the phrase essential fat or essential fatty acid fool you. These are not going to make you gain unwanted weight.

As those of us who truly understand weight loss and gain can tell you, the key to losing or gaining fat storage from your body centers around the bodies short term energy storage supply.

This article is for information purposes only. It is not meant to diagnose, treat or prevent any disease or condition. Consult your primary health care provider if you have or suspect you have any physical ailments.
