Aromatherapy Candles – Great For Bath Time!

I don’t know about you, but I find that my days are a constant whirl of activity, with very little “me” time these days, which is not what I anticipated. I had this rather naive idea that as my daughters grew older and needed less help from me, I would find that I had time on my hands to do whatever I liked whenever I wanted!

My friends all asked what I would do with all my “free” time once my daughters left high school. They seemed to think I would be lost with nothing to occupy my time. Well, now I seem to be busier than ever, and the days just fly by. But what I have discovered is that “me” time is very important, and yes, it does mean I have less time in a day for everything else, but I am more focused during that time.

So, what do I use my “me” time for? I have re-found the pleasure of baths. For years, I have showered daily, but never even thought about taking a bath just because it takes so much longer than taking a shower. I have, of course, read many times, that taking a bath can be beneficial, but who has time for that? Then a little while ago, I decided that it might just be worth it to see if a bath, complete with bath salts and aromatherapy candles, was as good a therapy as everyone else seems to think. So, I made sure there were no phones to disturb me, and off I went to the bathroom. Actually, I did have to round up a few things first.

I had to find the bath salts – it had been quite a while since anyone in our household had taken the time for a bath! – and then find where I had put the aromatherapy candles and the matches, and I just did this while the water was filling the bath tub. I lit the candles, turned off the electric light, and the room was transformed into a relaxing spa! For some fifteen minutes I was able to relax in the hot water, take in the scents of the aromatherapy candles, and watch the light dance around the room as the candles flickered.

I was amazed at the transformation of the room for a start. The candles really changed the atmosphere for the better. The aroma from the candles was so pleasant, and the light so relaxing that I regret not having done this before!. I’ve not taken the time to watch a flickering candle for a long time, and I found it to be very therapeutic. The hot water relaxed my muscles and tendons, and after just a few minutes I really did feel much more relaxed and at ease, and I actually slept much better than usual that night.

Did my work suffer as a result of the fifteen minutes of “me” time? Not at all. In fact I think it benefited since I slept better, and was able to function better the next day. Was it expensive? Not at all, just a few bath salts, and a few aromatherapy candles that will last for a few more bath times yet. Did the world fall apart while I was unavailable? Not at all. Everything was just as I left it! Was there a benefit for the members of the household? Definitely, a relaxed female, is always preferable to a highly stressed individual! Will I repeat the process? Definitely, in fact I think today on my trip to the grocery store, I shall pick up some more aromatherapy candles so I can have a choice each day, and I suggest you do the same. Taking a time out with aromatherapy candles is definitely the way to go! Enjoy!

The U.S. Anabolic Steroid Prevention Programs

The United States was up in arms against anabolic steroid use, when the studies of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control revealed shocking facts about anabolic steroid abuse.

According to the NIDA-funded 2002 survey, 2.5 of 8th graders, 3.5 of 10th graders, and 4 of 12th graders admitted engaged in anabolic steroid use. The Centers for Disease Control’s 2003 survey revealed that 6.1 of students were using anabolic steroid pills or jabs without a prescription, and the anabolic steroid substances are easily available for the teen students at gyms, sports-training centers, and on the Internet.

The survey and studies divulged that the kids as young as 9 years old were using anabolic steroid pills, creams, or shots. Young people were also using anabolic steroid drugs meant for veterinary purposes, as these anabolic steroids are usually cheaper and easier to obtain than anabolic steroid substances designed for people. Young anabolic steroid abusers were opening themselves out to the dangerous side effects, serious consequences, and deadly diseases, such as cancer and AIDS. The studies disclosed that 20 of anabolic steroid users share needles.

All this led the U.S. authorities to come into action against anabolic steroid abuse. The Anabolic Steroid Control Act was passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by the President in 2004. The Act stated that grants to public and nonprofit private organizations will be available to combat anabolic steroid use in the United States. According to the Bill, 15 million per year from 2005 to 2010 will be spent on anabolic steroid prevention with preference given to applicants to carry out programs based on ATLAS and ATHENA. ATLAS and ATHENA were the anabolic steroid prevention programs by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health.

The ATLAS Athletes Training & Learning to Avoid Steroids program was designed to prevent the anabolic steroid abuse among high school athletes, and to educate young male athletes about strength training, nutrition, and risk factors of anabolic steroid use. The ATLAS was designed at the Oregon Health & Science University by a team of researchers led by Dr. Linn Goldberg. Comprised of coaching and interactive classes on anabolic steroid abuse, ATLAS was very successful in reducing athletic supplement use, alcohol and illicit drug use, athlete anabolic steroid use, and improving the nutrition habits of young male athletes.

The ATHENA Athletes Targeting Healthy Exercise & Nutrition Alternatives was the anabolic steroid prevention program designed for adolescent females. The ATHENA aimed educated middle and high school adolescent girls against anabolic steroid use, body shaping drug use and disordered eating practices. According to the results published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, November, 2004, ATHENA helped girl student athletes to reduced use of diet pills and other substances, such as amphetamines, anabolic steroids, and muscle-building supplements.

Mental Health Awareness Through Online Sanity Tests

Whenever we feel confused or we don’t understand what is going on, and when we feel that we are getting overwhelmed by the turn of events that we almost lose a grip on reality… we tend to think that we may be going nuts or getting crazy.
Insanity, or madness, is a behavior caused by mental instability. Merriam-Webster defines it as a deranged state of the mind or lack of understanding. Insanity can be considered as poor health of the mind, not necessarily of the brain as an organ, which can affect mental health. People who go insane suffer from a defect in their mental processes or functions such as reasoning.
The term insanity encompasses mental disorders such as schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. These mental disorders are characterized by social withdrawal, deterioration of personal care, inability to perceive oneself as a separate entity, rapid shifting of thought and topic, autistic absorption, hallucinatory symptoms, delusions and often depersonalization. Symptoms can be singular or combined with a wide variation among sufferers. Motor activity is generally reduced and appearance become bizarre while perceptual and conversational distortions are evident.
Schizophrenia is a psychotic symptom which continue for at least six months coupled with the deterioration of occupational and social functioning. During a psychotic episode a person is confused about reality and often experiences delusions andor hallucinations.
Delusions are described as false, inaccurate beliefs that the person holds onto even when he or she is presented with accurate information. When a persons belief about one’s importance or station in life is grossly out of proportion to what is really true, the person is experiencing grandiose delusion. A perfect example is someone who claims to being Jesus Christ, or anybody who is an important figure and well-known. On the other hand, when a person believes that there is a conspiracy to harass, punish, or attack him or her, the person is having persecutory delusion. Usually, the person might also believe that the group to which one belongs is being harassed or punished.
Hallucinations are internal sensory perceptions of sights and sounds that are not actually present. People with visual hallucinations may see the image of something that is not real, such as another person. People who have auditory hallucinations hear something that is not really present, such as hearing a voice calling.
Mental health is a concern too often neglected by many of us. Thanks to the Internet, today, there are various websites that you can check which offer online quizzes designed to assess aspects of your mental health, including your risk for depression, anxiety and other emotional disorders. Sanity tests, which may take up to 15 minutes, are based on scientifically validated mental health assessments. Questionnaires are similar with those that a mental health professional might ask about mood and eating and sleeping habits. According to Dr. John Grohol, a psychologist who has created his own sanity site, the score is a numerical expression of your overall emotional health.
However, the mental health community has not officially sanctioned any test to measure one’s sanity. Therefore, one should not make any drastic health decisions based on these results. Still, the insight into your state of mind may offer self-awareness and could prompt you an overdue discussion with your doctor regarding appropriate therapy. Seeking professional advice to help sort out your mental health concerns and identifying areas of mental stress is always necessary.

The Facts About Anabolic Steroids

Anyone involved in the world of bodybuilding, and competitive sport generally, will understand the pressures that go with striving to achieve optimal performance. Sometimes athletes feel they cannot reach their peak without artificially enhancing their powers of recovery from intensive training. One way to speed up this process is through the use of anabolic steroids. In this article we’ll examine what anabolic steroids actually do. In a second article we’ll focus on the dangers associated with steroid use.

The main active ingredient in steroids is testosterone which is well known as the major male hormone. Testosterone affects the body in two ways, either as an anabolic or an androgenic influence. The anabolic action helps build body tissue by increasing lean muscle mass and bone density. The androgenic actions are those that affect secondary sex characteristics in men.

In recent years research has provided some interesting information in relation to testosterone

1. It affects muscle size through muscle fiber hypertrophy with an increase in the cross-sectional area of muscle fiber.

2. It takes a dose of at least 300 milligrams of testosterone to raise the body’s level above normal.

3. It acts directly on the muscle itself.

4. It stimulates the release of growth hormone.

5. It has an anti-catabolic effect.

From these facts we can deduce that testosterone is an effective aid to muscle building and that it must be taken in significant quantities to have this effect. As far as bodybuilding is concerned the science beyond this is somewhat limited as most users base their steroid regimes on little more than trial and error or the advice of ‘veterans’. Due to the illegal nature of steroid use little scientific data exists to confirm the effectiveness of the many steroid supplements in use.

It is perhaps the tendency of some bodybuilders to use a combination of powerful steroids and other drugs that presents the very real dangers that have sometimes led to tragic conquences.

Hoodia Gordonii – One Reason To Take It

When Hoodia was discovered the very first animal trials to test it was with Rats. The rats that were fed with Hoodia stopped eating completely. Rats are well know as animals that will eat anything and everything. Can you believe that an animal who loves to eat anything simply switched off its desire to eat, even when foods that rats love were placed in front of them.

When the first clinical human trial was conducted with Hoodia, several morbidly obese people were placed in a unit which was a closed off area were all that they could do was to read, watch television, interact with each other, and of course eat. Half the people were given Hoodia Gordonii to take, and half were given a placebo. After fifteen days, the group that had been taking Hoodia Gordonii had reduced their calorie intake by 1000 calories a day – despite taking no exercise and not being on a diet

This is due to the active ingredient in Hoodia Gordonii, the molecule known as P57, as it imitates the effects that glucose has on your brain, signaling that you are full. Your brain has what is called a Hypothalamus. This part of your brain controls your appetite. When you eat, the glucose levels in your body rise. As these levels go up, the hypothalamus sends off a signal to your cells to stop eating. This is when you start to feel full. Hoodia Gordonii’s molecule, P57, tells your brain the same exact thing, even if you haven’t eaten a bite. By mimicking the effects of glucose on your brain, the hypothalamus starts to send messages to your cells which in turn, make you feel full

Hoodia is grown in the Kalahari Desert region of South Africa, Hoodia Gordonii is an all natural appetite suppressant, derived from a cactus like plant with prickly spikes. Scientists have been researching the Hoodia plant for almost a decade, and have found it to be completely free of harmful side effects.

Are the health supplements safe?

Health supplements are now a common addition to our diet and in many situations they are the only solution to our health problems. However the Internet is simply flooded by SPAM and pop-up advertisements promising a quick relief from various illnesses if only we take put a name here health diet supplement and they are treated more and more like some kind of wonder pills. On the other hand, the benefits and dangers of using them are more and more discussed among physicians. The use of various supplements in bodybuilding process and the dangers of abusing them do not help.

The point is that health supplement really do work, but not for everybody and certainly they’re not for every occasion.

Nutritional deficiencies
Basically dietary health supplements were originally developed to help people overcome their nutritional deficiencies. If, for any reason, an individual is unable to follow a balanced diet, health supplements help them to keep your organism intact. However in most cases when an individual eats healthy food a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. For example, health supplements are no longer needed and taking them will have only little effect and not always a positive one.

Bodybuildingfitness
Another common reason of taking health supplements is bodybuilding. When we want more than to be fit, the normal diet is not enough and we need to take something more serious if we hope to keep up the unhealthily quick pace of the muscles grow. That’s where the health supplements come. However as they are often taken without any medical knowledge and they need to be taken in large quantities if they are to have a visible effect, their final effects may no longer be positive.

Conclusion
In short, health supplements are OK, but only as long as people use them for the reasons they were made for – to fight nutritional deficiencies. Bodybuilding or the general need of feeling healthy are not good reasons for taking those pills even herbal ones. Our body is a delicate mechanism and we shouldn’t tinker in it too much without a serious reason.

Ginseng; Is It Really Beneficial or an Asian Myth?

For thousands of years, ginseng has been revered in the Orient as an almost magical natural supplement with amazing benefits for those who use it regularly. It is said that ginseng will boost the immune system, enhance vitality, increase physical endurance, increase mental alertness, and treat illnesses like colds, fevers, headaches, and vomiting. It is even believed to be an aphrodisiac.

Lets face it, if ginseng actually had the properties to give all the benefits it is believed to give, people would be taking it with every meal. The fact is however, the benefits of ginseng fall a far sight short of its claims.

Commercially, ginseng is taken as tea, in capsules, in liquid form from viles, or even by eating the root itself. Usually it is taken in doses of around 5 grams at a time. Ginseng is most commonly grown in Asia, particularly in China, Korea, and Japan, although it can also be found in wooded areas from Quebec to Missouri.

Ginsenosides, which is the active substance in the root, has been shown to increase endurance and decrease fatigue in mice when given to them in large amounts. One study where large amounts were given to humans noted a small improvement in the endurance levels of those who took it. Also, Chinese herbal medicine, published by the US National Institute of Health, claims the use of ginseng can raise unusually low blood pressure and can help prevent shock after heart attacks.

However, there is no good scientific evidence to support any of the claims made of these alleged benefits of consuming this root. It is also very likely that when you buy ginseng at the store, it will have a low concentration of ginsenosides in it. This means that even if ginseng does have some marginal benefit to offer, you will probably not receive any of them.

The lancet, a British medical journal, published a study done in Sweden which showed that most commercially sold ginseng products contained only trace amounts of ginsenosides. These findings concluded that the amount of ginsenosides found in these products was too insignificant to be of any benefit. Some of the products, including two sold in the US Siberian Ginseng and Up Your Gas, had almost none of this substance at all.

For the most part, taking small to moderate amounts of ginseng will not be harmful to you, but you have to ask yourself if dollar for dollar it is worth taking something which is of no real value or benefit to you. We all can fall victim to hype made about a product, especially one that has been around for thousands of years, but when there is no good, proven science to support that products claims, save your money for a more useful purpose.
