Controversial Implants Approved

On July twenty-eight 2005, the FDA ended a 13 year ban on silicone-gel breast implants and issued a letter of approval to Mentor Corp allowing the reintroduction of these controversial implants into the medical marketplace. This move came about as Mentor Corp. persuaded the FDA that its newer silicone implants are less dangerous and even more durable than older versions. The company will employ these implants only under the following strict safety conditions approved per FDA guidlines.

- Prospective patients must sign a consent form acknowledging that they realise the risks of a silicone breast implant including the fact that they may break and require replacement or even removal.

- Mentor is only allowed to sell silicone breast implants to board-certified plastic surgeons who complete a successful practical training program to learn how to insert these implants in a way that minimizes the odds of tears and breakage.

- Mentor must make and maintain a registry to track the implant patients long term results.

- Patients must be educated about the fact that if an implant breaks, the effect of the breakage occasionally does not cause immediate symptoms. Further, patients are advised to have an MRI after five years and two years thereafter to check for breakage.

- Mentor must conduct a 10 year study to determine the percentage of breast implants that will break in that time.

- The implant study must be audited by an independent committee.

- The FDA will review the results of the Mentor breast implant program in five years to verify that the implants are performing as expected.

Based on data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 334,052 breast augmentations were performed in the United States in 2004, mostly using salt water filled implants being sold without restriction. Consumer studies predict that if the silicone breast implants return to the market, 200,000 women will visit plastic surgeons to get them in the first year. Health concerns aside, silicone implants have a more “natural” appearance and consistency than the saline version, and are therefore preferred by consumers.

Silicone-gel breast implants were first introduced in 1962 and were banned in 1992 amid health fears. Research since then has shown no statistical correlation between silicone breast implants and cancer or even rare auto-immune diseases such as lupus. A select few women will swear that their health deteriorated from the moment they received their implants, however this is anecdotal evidence. When researchers do studies comparing a large group of women with implants to an equal-sized group without them, no difference between the 2 groups is observed in the number of women with tumors or autoimmune diseases.

The most commom problem reported is formation of excess scar tissue around the breast implant due to a foreign-body reaction. If it’s localized, it can cause traction and rippling effects in the appearance of the implant. If the scar tissue entirely encircles the implant the condition is called capsular contraction. These scars can mold the implant into an unnatural rounded shape, so that the implant patient appears to have a baseball stuck under the skin on her chest. This condition develops more frequently with smooth-walled silicone implants, though it occurs to a lesser extent with saline implants as well. Implants set behind the chest muscle have a much lower incidence of this problem. As the scar tissue tends to re-form, surgeons can every now and again break the scar tissue manually. However this is proscribed by the manufacturer, as it can break the implant and void the manufacturer’s warranty. Typically, patients with breast implant contractures require follow-up surgery.

Surprisingly , the asthma drug Accolate has proven useful in preventing and even reversing capsular contraction, though months of drug treatment may be necessary.

Other possible complications include seroma a collection of serous fluid, hematoma blood, synmastia breasts that pop up to be fused in the center, bottoming out implant slides too far down the chest, double-fold the implant’s outline doesn’t corresspond to the natural crease of the breast, deflation the implant breaks, tissue necrosis localized demise of tissue and infection.

Handbags – A Historical Perspective

A recent study revealed that the average handbag and its contents are worth a whopping 900 dollars! That’s 120 billion dollars women are carrying around in handbags nationwide. And can you blame us, really, when there’s such an abundance of variety in the handbag market?

It could well be argued that handbags have overtaken shoes as the luxury collectable accessory of choice for celebrities and ordinary women alike.

But in fact handbags may have as long and controversial a history as the ubiquitous high heel, and according to handbag historians they were used in a similar way – to show the status of the wearer.

In the fourteenth century, the richer and more powerful the person the more jewels and embroidery festooned the handbag. Not much has changed in the handbag world, then.

Over the centuries handbags have gone through many adaptations and fashions, but the word ‘handbag’ was only coined in the 1900′s. That decade also heralded the type of handbag we would recognise today – with bags getting increasingly smaller and the introduction of handbag fasteners, inner compartments and locks.

But that’s enough history clearly the most important time period in terms of handbags was the fifties, which saw the rise of the ultimate handbag designer houses; including Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermes.

Like Chanel’s Number 5 perfume, some of these handbags have become instantly recognisable fashion icons; signifiers of the rich and the famous. Sadly, though, this means that showing off your new Louis Vuitton at the office party, or having a stash of Gucci handbags in the wardrobe, is out of the price range of almost everybody.

We should be grateful for the Internet, for perhaps giving us mortals a chance to own a genuine Gucci handbag without having to win the lottery or shoplift. The web is so full of second hand designer handbag dealers that auction giant Ebay have branched out with their own dedicated handbag site, e bags.

Even better, high street shops are increasingly living up the ideals set by the designer houses, and its never been more likely that you can buy a handbag for 8 dollars and pass it off as a unique one-off! Truly his decade ought to be the decade of the handbag and specifically the stylish and affordable handbag. Handbag fans rejoice!

Making Your Own Flower Arrangements

Flowers have long been used to symbolize lifes important events and emotions. Roses are symbols of love, lilies, the flowers of death and renewal, and carnations a sign of appreciation. We use flowers as wedding decorations, Valentines Day presents and Christmas ornaments. No matter what the occasion is, a beautiful flower arrangement is a wonderful way to celebrate life through vibrant colors and rich floral scents.

Florists provide customers with a variety of arrangements made specifically for certain occasions and events. However, if you are on a budget, flower arrangements can be fairly pricey. Professional florists charge exorbitant amounts for their expertise, and the flowers themselves can be extremely expensive. Making your own arrangements can be a fun and creative alternative to ordering pieces from a florist. By purchasing flowers individually, you can choose the exact colors and scents you need to say exactly what you want to communicate.

When making your own flower arrangement, you should first consider its purpose. If you are making arrangements for a wedding, white is typically the presiding color. You should start with basic white flowers and add a few accents that match the bridesmaids dresses. Large leafy green pieces add a nice contrast to delicate buds for table centerpieces, and sometimes simplicity is the best aesthetic tactic. If you are making centerpieces for several tables, you can purchase your flowers in bulk and use one design over and over again, or you can make each piece an individual work of art.

For vase arrangements, choose your container first, and pick flowers that are the correct height for the vase. When you cut your flowers, be sure to cut the stems at an angle so they can absorb water correctly and stay fresh for a long time. Vase arrangements require a focal point, and this can be one large flower or a grouping of several. It is important to choose a color scheme and to stick with it. For instance, you would not want to mix red and pink roses, or to combine yellow daisies with died green carnations. Make sure you choose flowers that look and smell good in combination with each other, and fill in the gaps with babys breath and leafy greenery.

When you are making larger potted flower arrangements, an aesthetically pleasing plant is a great base for your design. However, you might not want to combine a spiky cactus with soft blooming roses. If you are using only flowers, you will need a piece of arranging foam to provide a structure for the piece. Green foam can be purchased at most craft stores, and it can be cut to fit any shape you need. Before you start sticking in your stems, you might sketch out an idea of the final product. If the arrangement is to be large, pick a few large flowers to act as focal points rather than picking a multitude of tiny blooms. Too many small flowers distract the eye and make the arrangement seem busy rather than soothing.

Once you have chosen all of your flowers and greenery, begin arranging them in the container. It will take several tries and lot of adjusting before your create a finished product, but be confident and do what looks best. Arranging flowers is an intuitive art, and if you have chosen a good color scheme and a variety of shapes and sizes, the correct eye-pleasing concoction will often fall into place with little effort. When you are finished, you will have a beautiful, natural decoration to perk up even the gloomiest of environments, and you will have the satisfaction of having created a wonderful work of art.

Sunless Tanning At Home

Sunless tanning is the only safe way to achieve the perfect tan you want. They can be used year round or just for a holiday or vacation. You can achieve a beautiful artificial tan at home or visit a salon or spa for a session in a sunless tanning booth. A benefit of self tanning is that it can be done at any time and in any weather.

Sunless Tanning at Home

Some people cringe when they hear self tanning. They are usually thinking about the earliest self tanners, which were notorious for the ugly orange color they produced. Products have improved dramatically over the years. Self tanner products come in a variety of forms including lotion, crme and spray. You can find them in stores or on the internet wherever tanning bed lotions are sold.

Preparing your skin is very important before using a sunless tanning lotion. Shower and exfoliate the skin before using any product. This removes dead skin cells and prepares your skin to accept the tanning product. Good exfoliation results in better absorption, more even color and a tan that lasts longer.

Applying the product evenly is very important. Tinted lotions help you see where you have applied the lotion and help ensure even coverage. Wear plastic gloves during application to help prevent the hands from staining. Apply the product to the rough and dry areas of your body last. This includes the elbows, knees and ankles.

The best lotions contain an active ingredient called DHA. The DHA reacts with your skin cells to change the color. It can take between 45 minutes and 1 hour to see the full effect of the product. The tan will last between five and seven days. To maintain the color, apply the lotion every three to five days.

Sunless Tanning in a Booth

Sunless tanning booths are popping up in day spas, beauty salons, tanning salons and health clubs across the country. As people become aware of the dangers of UV exposure, the popularity of booths increases. A few minutes in the booth, and you can have the color that it would take days in the sun to achieve.

Booth tanning is done in two ways. The first is a shower booth with nozzles on every side that spray your body with the solution. You get into the booth naked with a shower cap on your head and eye protection. The nozzles spray you down with the tanning solution. Bronzers in the spray give you some instant color. The full effect of the tan will be seen in a few hours. In some cases, you will need to rub the solution into your skin. Its important to blend it evenly for the best color.

The other method used is airbrush. A technician uses a hand held airbrush device to apply the solution. Since the mist is much finer than a spray and a technician is applying it, the color is perfect and even. You just wait about five minutes for the mist to soak in before getting dressed. Wear very loose clothing to the salon, as tight clothing can rub off some of the color.

Most people enter the booth naked for no tan lines. If you are shy being nude with a technician, you can wear a bathing suit. Choose an old bathing suit for the booth. The solution will stain the bathing suit.

Spray Tanning – What To Expect

Spray tanning has become a modern fashion phenomenon. It is a brilliant way of avoiding both the shocking risks of skin cancer associated with regular sun bathing and sun beds, and also the streaky, orange look that gives self-tanning lotions and mousses a tacky reputation.

The high-quality results of spray tanning meant that only a few years ago it was reserved for celebrities and the very rich now however, there is somewhere offering the treatment in most communities. Often it is easily available from hairdressers, sun bed salons or specialist businesses.

The Internet can help you locate the nearest spray-tanning provider to you. Additionally certain sites display reviews and ratings of individual salons, giving potential customers an idea of what to expect, and maybe which places to avoid.

What happens when you go to the salon will vary, but most reputable providers will ask you to fill out a record card. This is important, as it informs the salon assistants of any allergies you have, and also, by recording your weight and height, allows them to calculate more exactly how much sunless-tanning solution you will personally need.

It is also recommended, and in some places will be required, that you ask for a patch test twenty four hours before you plan to tan. This minor inconvenience could prevent an uncomfortable and unsightly allergic reaction and is therefore all the more important before a spray tanning, which will cover most of your body.

There may be changing rooms or a special area where you can undress to your underwear. This is the part most new customers are nervous about, but it is completely unnecessary, as the salon assistants are experienced professionals. They are doing their job, not judging the bodies of their clients, and would generally be disciplined for making jokes or personal remarks. And contrary to some high school myths spray tanning never, ever requires full nudity!

The streak-less, natural-looking effect achieved through spray tanning is a result of the body being covered with a fine mist of tanning solution, rather than having a cream or mousse rubbed in inaccurately by hand. Some specialist salons have developed an even better technology, Electrostatic, which uses the static energy of your body to disperse the tanning spray evenly over your skin.

Before you go to your spray tanning appointment, it is very important to prepare yourself properly, or the results will be affected. Do not wax or shave less than a day before your spray-tan, as this increases the chance of irritation. However, before you go to your session exfoliate your skin to create a smooth surface.

If you want to wear your own underwear, rather than the paper ones provided by the salon, it should be dark or old, as there is a high risk of staining. Additionally you should arrive at the spray-tanning appointment in loose clothing, as tight clothing may rub the bronzer off in the first twenty four hours. If you take all these precautions, and use the net to help you find the best provider, you could be enjoying a flawless, natural, glowing tan all this summer, and winter too!

When Early Signs of Menopause Strike Women

Signs of menopause could strike women with as early as in their late 30s. And although the average onset of menopause would normally occur when a woman has reached 51 years, there are women of 40s and 50s who were already confronting early signs of menopause process.

Menopause signs How do they afflict women?

Menopause occurs when the ovary of the woman has ceased functioning. Female hormones are the active glands when female body characteristics are developing. These hormones are sourced from the ovary. When the ovary has stopped functioning, this means that there will be no more hormones that could regulate the development of the body and as well as regulating menstrual cycle or pregnancy, thus, the onset of menopause – with which a gradual process of body transition would be experienced.

What are the early signs that a woman is entering her menopausal stage?

The very common sign that a woman is already undergoing the first phase of her menopause is when she is already experiencing irregularity in her menstruation cycle, without appearances of other medical reasons for this experience. It should not be confused, however, that women who have fluctuations with their hormone level production are undergoing menopausal transition. By medical definition, menopause process is attributed to the absence of menstrual cycle in 12 months period.

Before your last menstrual period, you will start experiencing the very first sign of menstruation transition varying menstrual cycle lengths. This is called perimenopause. At this point, you will already be experiencing different early signs of menopausal symptoms. These signs could be distributed to your physical, psychological, and sexual aspects.

The fluctuation and falling of your hormone production may last for several years, depending on the ovarian function or activity that women may go through. Signs leading to menopause symptoms may procure intermittent changes in the womans daily and nightly activities.

The following signs are manifestations of menopausal symptoms

Physical signs of your menopausal cycle are hot flashes, palpitations, insomnia, night sweats, headaches, and joint aches. These signs are often the results of your bodys temperature control.

Psychological signs, on the other hand, are the results of the hormonal changes, in which different levels of emotional stress are experienced. You may encounter mood swings, from irritability to anxiety; from the difficulty in concentrating or forgetfulness; and from the difficulty of coping to easy feeling of stress and pressured moments.

You will also experience a gradual change with your sexual habit. You may have discomforting moments during your intercourse. This is the cause of vaginal dryness an occurrence because of low estrogen level. Your interest in sexual activities may gradually decrease.

After the last month of your menstruation period comes your postmenopausal stage. During this time, in which it encompasses all of the period after perimenopause, you will be experiencing severity of the discomfort you earlier have gone through. These can include urine infection may lead to discomfort on your passing urine, frequent passing urine whether at daytime and nighttime, leakage of your urine, vaginal dryness and even itching or burning, and vaginal discharge.

As your estrogen level gets affected by the fall of collagen production, the protein needed in maintaining your skin, tendons, hair and nails, you may also see marking changes from those body parts. Skin dryness, hair thinning, and growth of unwanted hair may occur although some of these occurrences can be attributed to ageing.

Finesse Female Facial Hair Removal

Female facial hair can be embarrassing. It often appears first during puberty and then gets darker and coarser after the age of thirty five, when facial hair removal becomes an important issue.

Most female facial hair appears over the lip and on the chin, but many females have unwanted hair on their jaw, cheeks and neck. Fortunately, there are a number of different ways to finesse female facial hair removal.

First and foremost, a female should determine the underlying cause of her facial hair before deciding on a removal method.

Females who are pregnant or nursing often notice an increase of facial hair. They should speak with their doctor before using any hair removal method that uses energy, chemicals or drugs.

Females who have high levels of androgens, a steroid hormone, such as testosterone or androsterone, that controls the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics, creating facial hair may obtain prescription oral medications from a medical specialist.

Tweezing is probably the method most often used to remove female facial hair. But while it’s okay to use tweezers for eyebrows, it really isn’t for other female facial hair. It’s painful, time consuming usually needing to be done on a daily basis, and over time, tweezing can damage the skin.

Some females believe they can conceal their facial hair by bleaching it, but then, under make up and in bright light their face looks, “furry”.

Topical creams for female facial hair removal, available only by prescription, inhibit the growth of new hairs for about 50 of the females who have used one.

Shaving with a wet razor is not recommended as a female facial hair removal method because hairs grow back very quickly and the stubble appears thicker and darker.

One can remove unwanted female facial hair with a hair removal cream or lotion known as a depilatory. But don’t be surprised if you get pimples as a reaction to the harsh chemicals.

A facial wax is a clean, fast and easy method for removing female facial hair for up to 6 weeks. But, many experience swelling and redness in reaction to the hairs being literally yanked out.

Electrolysis is an unpleasant form of female facial hair removal because it involves inserting a needle into the follicle, the skin depression from which the hair emerges, of each individual hair, which can cause swelling, redness, pinpoint scabbing and even scarring. Electrolysis requires anesthesia, is expensive and needs to be done regularly for 1 or 2 years to achieve final results.

Laser treatments for female facial hair removal can provide results within six to eight treatments – If you can afford the hefty cost. Because laser hair removal involves a hot laser light, “zapping”, the hair follicles, these treatments require the use of a topical anesthetic.

One last thing – If you do your own research you’ll discover there is one more hair removal method that will help you finesse your female facial hair.

Is Botox Right for You?

Botulin toxin, sold commercially under the brand name Botox, is an exceptionally potent neurotoxin that has found a variety of remarkable uses in modern medicine. It is also the most popular nonsurgical medical cosmetic treatment in the UK and USA.

Researchers discovered in the 1950s that injecting overactive muscles with minute quantities of botulinum toxin type A decreased muscle activity by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, thereby rendering the muscle unable to contract for a period of 4 to 6 months.

Alan Scott, a San Francisco ophthalmologist, first applied tiny doses of the toxin in a medicinal sense to treat crossed eyes and uncontrollable blinking, but a partner was needed to gain regulatory approval to market his discovery as a drug. Allergan, Inc., a small pharmaceutical company that focused on prescription eye therapies and contact lens products, bought the rights to the drug in 1988 and quickly received FDA approval in 1989. Allergan renamed the drug Botox.

Cosmetic benefits of Botox were quickly realized when the frown lines between the eyebrows appeared to soften following treatment for eye muscle disorders. The increased potential of Botox as a cosmetic treatment led to clinical trials and subsequent FDA approval in April 2002.

Currently, Botox is finding enormous additional potential in several therapeutic areas including the treatment of migraine headaches, cervical dystonia a neuromuscular disorder involving the head and neck, blepharospasm involuntary contraction of the eye muscles, and severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis excessive sweating. Other uses of botulinum toxin type A that are widely known but not approved by FDA include urinary incontinence, anal fissure, spastic disorders associated with injury or disease of the central nervous system including trauma, stroke, multiple sclerosis, or cerebral palsy and focal dystonias affecting the limbs, face, jaw, or vocal cords. It is also used off label for the treatment of TMJ, but a side effect in some patients is a jaw left too weak to chew solid food for about 3 months after the injection.

Treatment and prevention of chronic headache and chronic musculoskeletal pain are emerging uses for botulinum toxin type A. In addition, there is evidence that Botox may aid in weight loss by increasing the gastric emptying time.

As an alternative to Botox, anti-aging creams are heavily marketed and advertised on television, with the promise of looking younger and the reduction in visible wrinkles on the skin.

Traditionally, they have been targeted towards women, but products specifically targeting men are now common. This change may be due to the fact that many societies in recent years have seen an increased focus on young looks, including in men. Some men report that looking younger makes it easier to get a good job.

There are a range of cosmetic ‘treatments’ for the appearance of wrinkles on the skin such as plastic surgery and botox injections. One of the marketed advantages of anti-aging cream is that it is an alternative to these more extreme cosmetic treatments.

Critics take the view that the manufacturers of these products prey on the fears of women, and that the advertisements abuse science by claiming that their products are scientifically proven to work. It is said that the ‘scientific data’ is based on the perception of women who have tried the product, and are asked whether or not they think they look younger. These are the hallmarks of a placebo.

However, it is plausible that some of the anti-aging products could have a rejuvenating effect, as promised. However, the effects of most anti-aging products likely depends on their concentration and mode of application, making their effects less certain.
