Most people recognize something like lower back pain to be a sign of work-related stress. This is not something that most people would dispute, though it isn’t something that a number of them would pay that much attention to either. While stress relief methods like exercise and video gaming can go a long way in helping someone relieve the pain, there are other bits of advice one can listen to that can help out in the long run. Preventing back pain can go a long way in improving one’s overall mood and stress levels, though like many things in life, there are many ways to go about doing that.

Treatment for back pain is a massive industry, eating up around 24 million every year. Practically the entire chiropractic industry is firmly grounded in treating problems such as back pain. Hollywood and the media frequently make references to it, either in the form of comic interpretations of the hazards of it or the occasional public interest segment on news shows. For the most part, these things focus on the triggers and the side effects of such pain, but very little is done to cover the ways to prevent or relieve the symptoms of it. Most people believe that simply maintaining good posture would be enough, but there are other things that need to be kept in mind.

A firm mattress is also essential to preventing or relieving back pain. The mattress used should be a comfortable one that will not place undue stress on the back muscles while sleeping. It should also be firm and sturdy, rather than overly soft. Firmer mattresses help in maintaining the natural shape of the spinal column and back muscles, which helps reduce problems. There are also some pillow than can help maintain the natural form of the back, though they often only work for the upper back and shoulder areas. Sleeping position also matters, with lying on one’s side being the most effective position for maintaining proper back posture.

Obesity and poor health clearly have an appreciable effect on the back. As the primary support structure of the body, spinal muscles bear much of the pressure needed to keep the body upright. Poor health practices, excessive weight, and a compromised cardiovascular system can all have damaging effects on the back muscles and cause them to be more prone to weakness and pain. Other things, such as improper lifting technique, neglecting to warm up before engaging in strenuous physical activity, and smoking can all have side effects as well.

Lower back pain Symptoms and Remedies


Pain or discomfort in the lower portion of our back and the spinal column is a common phenomenon and can be largely attributed to our changing lifestyles. Wrong posture or inadequate exercise is most often the cause of the pain in the lower spinal column. The treatment of such a pain can vary from a simple over the counter medicine to surgery depending on the severity and the cause.

The pain is generally felt in the lumbar and the sacral region and can also affect other areas. A sprain in the muscles or the ligaments constituting the lower portion of the spine can be the most common cause of backache. Some of the other problems that involve pain in the lower back are disc degeneration due to arthritis or ageing, spondylitis, infections and tumors.

In most of the cases the pain is localized in the lower back and vanishes after some time. However, it may even extend to the buttock or the leg on the affected side. In cases wherein the pain is persistent and increases with time or results in weakness in the foot or loss of bladder control- proper medical check up becomes essential.

In some cases stiffness or persistent pain around the spine can disturb your sleep resulting in further problems like tiredness. Such problems can be rectified by the used of pillows designed to maintain our body posture and thus ensure proper sleep. The use of the wrong type of mattresses can also affect the body posture and result in back pain.

Keep Your Back From Backing Out On You


Despite all the focus on health and fitness in the modern world, people can still end up ignoring some areas of the body. For example, with all the focus being placed on toning one’s abs and shaping one’s limbs, there is often little time left for the primary support structure of the body. While working on the muscle fitness of the back can be a little odd to listen to, even if we don’t have the time to work on it, we can at least take some steps to help reduce the chances of lower back pain. While your spinal column and back muscles aren’t the most observed areas of your body, they are the parts that hold everything together.

The first thing you should do to take care of your back is to actually pay attention to the signals it gives. A little pain can be understandable and maybe even be ignored, depending on what you were doing at the time. However, if your back is becoming a source of chronic pain, you may want to consult a physician. Chronic pain can be a sign that something is wrong with your back. The list of possible causes for this type of problem is fairly long, but it can include things like torn muscle tissue or decreased bone density. Even if the pain isn’t chronic, if it occurs frequently enough, then you might still want to consult a medical professional. Things like this are often signs of worse problems and are best attended to while the problem is still in the early stages.

Be sure to warm up and cool down your muscles before engaging in any sort of heavy physical activity. This includes stuff like lifting objects and do-it-yourself tasks. Getting your muscles prepped up for physical activity is key to keeping them from being damaged and causing you a lifetime of chronic pain complaints. Properly lifting weights can also be used to help reduce the amount of stress and damage that you do to your back muscles. Avoid twisting your back when you lift an object, and make sure it is as close to your body as possible. Also, use your legs to provide to provide the strength needed to lift the object off the ground to avoid damaging your back.

Proper support of the neck and back is critical to preventing back injuries. In general, sleeping on your side is the best for the back, as it relieves a large amount of pressure on it. Sleeping face-down can cause a lot of damage to your neck and back, depending on how you sleep. Use a pillow that provides adequate neck support and make sure your head isn’t elevated too much from the rest of the body.

Along the lines of the above idea, you might also want to take a look at the right furniture to support your back. In general, the comfortable chairs are terrible, as the back is not properly supported and can often make you slouch to do your work. Preferably, the chairs should be kept straight and your feet should touch the ground. A nice, firm bed that isn’t too hard is also good for the back.

Martial arts are systems of offensive and defensive combat movements which includes proper punching, kicking, blocking, and other combative skills. Many people often associate martial arts to violence and brutality. Even though this form of art was developed for self defense, this craft is just about throwing punches or performing high kicks. Martial arts are seen as expressions of valor, chivalry, and self-sacrifice. It is a philosophy which stresses that people should live in peace and harmony. Martial arts philosophy emphasizes on the essence of self-control, respect for others, and positive perspective to strive for the best in life. Martial arts are part of an Eastern tradition that gives emphasis on the fortification of the mind, body, and spirit. Its teachings emphasize that a true martial artist must become physically, mentally, and emotionally strong enough to avoid fighting. The many forms of martial arts include Karate, Kung-Fu, Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Yaw-Yan, and Jiu Jitsu.

Martial arts include high-energy training that can improve strength, speed, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. However, just like other sports or physical activities, there are injuries that can be encountered in martial arts training or competition. Quite surprisingly, the risk of injury from martial arts is lower compared to other contact sports. A research conducted at George Washington University in the United States concluded that the injury rate in martial arts training is lower than other contact sports like rugby, American football, basketball, and hockey. Most injuries associated with martial arts are aching limbs and lower back pain, which are usually mild to moderate injuries.

Common injuries in martial arts may include

Skin damage — such as cuts and bruises.
Sprains — Many sprains occur in the ankles, elbows, and other joint areas. Many ankle sprains develop because of improper weight distribution while kicking.
Strains — injury to the muscle or tendon. Some muscles may tear from rapid stops that occurs when forceful contact is made with an opponent or object.
Knee pain injuries — caused by the bent-knee stance typical of most martial arts and the use of forceful kicks that can injure the joint if not done properly.
Head injuries head injuries can occur during training or competition because of heavy impacts of kicks and punches in the head area. Wearing high quality helmet and mouth guards is advised among martial artists
Dislocations and fractures — particularly of the hand, finger, foot and toe.
Overuse injuries — any part of the body can be injured by sheer repetition of movement.

Martial arts training involve strenuous movements that may put high stress on muscles and joints. To avoid injuries, it is very important to give special attention to stretching. Stretching regularly helps maintain or increase flexibility and lower the risk of injuries. In addition to stretching, martial arts training should also include exercises meant to improve overall conditioning and muscle training before undertaking any comprehensive martial arts training. By strengthening the muscles, joints, and coordination, athletes will be able to make martial arts training safer and more injury-free. Breathing techniques are also important as part of the practice of martial arts. Exhaling while contracting muscles and inhaling while resting the muscles may help prevent injuries.

By warming-up properly, breathing extensively, and wearing necessary equipment, martial artists and athletes can avoid injuries that may hamper the progress of their training and level of competitiveness.

The spinal column is among the core areas of the human body, representing the single largest, unbroken set of connections between the body and the brain.As such, the spinal column and pretty much anything and everything around it, are integral to human operations. However, like all parts of the body, the spinal column can sometimes be prone to a number of physical maladies, not least of which is lower back pain.
The pain is often attributed to strenuous activity involving lifting or over-exerting back muscles. This is commonly displayed for comedic effect in the media, though it occurs often enough in real life to be a concern. Lower back pain is most often an effect of improperly lifting a weight, which puts undue stress on the lower back, as well as some areas of the legs. As the body ages, lower back pain becomesmore frequent. This is due to the lower back muscles losing tensile strength and flexibility, along with the spinal column slowly becoming more brittle. Lower back pain, at this stage of the game, is often seen to be just the tip of the iceberg.
Lower back pain, however, may be a sign of something more alarming in store. The spinal column is home to a number of nerves and neural connections. Lower back pain is a relatively minor concern, as more serious damage to the spinal column can result in partial or total paralysis, depending on the extent of the damage. Barring that extreme but very real possibility, the loss of some motor functions or feeling may also occur if the spine is damaged.
Another concern would be spinal arthritis, which can sometimes go undetected until it is too late. This is understandable, as spinal arthritis does not usually have the same visual signals as arthritis does in the rest of the body. However, the general list of symptoms of arthritis are the same.
The symptoms of arthritis may be similar regardless of what area of the body is affected, but the core problem is that some of these signs are easy to be mistaken for something else. One of the most common and prevalent symptoms of arthritis is pain in the affected areas. This is fine for other parts of the body, but for the back, most people tend to ignore it and believe it to be no different from back pains induced by muscle stress or excessive physical work.Only when the pain becomes a semi-regular occurrence do some people consider the possibility that the problem might be more than just normal pain.
Difficulty in movement, particularly of the lower back and lower limbs, is also among the commonly ignored symptoms of arthritis. This is sometimes speculated to be caused by people believing that these problems are merely the result of aging or improper nutrition. Indeed, difficulty in moving some muscles and bones in the body can be caused by the aging process, which generally limits the range and speed of a person’s movements. Also, it is a popular conception that poor nutrition, or the lack of specific nutrients, can make moving the lower half of the body difficult. As a result, as one of the symptoms of arthritis, this is often ignored.
One of the symptoms of arthritis that people generally do not ignore, however is spinal deformity, which is the most outward physical manifestation of spinal arthritis. While this is easily confused with other possible causes of spinal deformity, there is virtually no chance that it would
be ignored.

Top Tips For Lower Back Pain Relief


Lower back pain is a common infliction that affects over 80 of the adult population at one time or another in their lifetime. There are also many causes, and it can be difficult to directly determine the source of the problem without medical intervention, ie. a visit to the doctor or chiropractor.

Some of the more usual causes are likely to be undertaking physical activity in which the body is not used to, such as strenuous gardening or lifting of overly heavy objects.

This over-exertion can result in a slipped disk or a herniated disk. This is a result of twisting, generally while lifting. A slipped disk sounds worse than it probably is. It is merely the occurrence of your spinal bone bulging slightly, and touching on some nerves. Some basic exercises can help to relieve the pain and rectify the slipped disk issue.

Tip 1 Lie on Your Back.

Now this may sound simple and it is! but it is also highly effective. Lie flat on the floor, with some pillows placed under your head and knees for support. This takes the strain away from your lower back. An alternative is to place a pillow on a chair seat, and rest your feet on the chair, with your back on the floor.

It is recommended to stay in this position for around 5-25 minutes each session.

This is a great way of resting the back and relieving the pressure off your lower back. You should perform this exercise for no more than 1 to 2 days in a row, getting up and walking around every hour.

Tip 2 Use Heating Pads andor Ice Packs

Heated pads will help to relieve muscle spasm. Use these for 20-30 mins at a time. Ice packs are also a suitable alternative.

Tip 3 Medicines to Reduce Swelling

Some medications that assist in reducing swelling are Aspirin and Entrophen. Panadol is also helpful in controlling minor pain while you rest your lower back and recuperate.

Tip 4 Massage for Muscle Relief

Massaging the lower back can help to reduce any inflammation and swelling. And as the muscles relax, circulation is increased and pain often lessens.

If these tips are combined, together with much needed bed rest, your back pain should be gone and your back should be returned to its old self.
