Are People Going Nuts In Rural Areas?

Awareness of mental health illnesses can occasionally become the critical factor in whether or not someone gets the proper treatment in time. Most psychological conditions take time to form and often need time to become fully embedded into the psyche, barring trauma or other similar experiences. As a result, provided that people are aware of what is going on, most psychological illnesses can be treated in time. Most people assume that with the hectic schedules and the extreme stress, people in an urban environment are more liable to develop mental illnesses. This is an understandable assumption, but one must also factor in that in an urban environment, there are numerous places one can go to for help.

The case is different when one enters the rural environment, however. Small towns, out-of-the-way villages, and semi-isolated communities are far more prevalent than big cities. Surprisingly, those are the places where people are far more likely to break down and succumb to psychiatric problems than urban dwellers. There is still a lot of research being conducted on this discovery, with previous studies having yielded inconclusive results. Research has also been focused on discovering whether the list of common problems reflect those found in urban environments or not. In particular, some experts are trying to spot if depression, anxiety, and panic disorders are as common in rural communities as they are in urban ones.

Some have speculated that the problem might stem from the lack of awareness of psychiatric or psychological illnesses in rural areas. Most people there, according to recent findings and surveys, attribute the symptoms of psychosis to supernatural causes. Demonic possession appears to be among the more frequent causes of the problem. While currently undetermined, there has been some speculation that the stigma of having a family member be possessed can force loved ones to keep the afflicted person hidden from the rest of society, rather than seek some form of help. This can only aggravate the situation because it not only cuts off the patient from much-needed therapy and counseling, it can also make any illnesses already present much more severe and difficult to treat.

Another factor to be considered here is that, statistically speaking, there are simply not that many people with psychiatric or psychological training in rural environments. There might be some people that have an understanding, but it is rare to find a small town with a fully-equipped hospital designed to deal with patients with psychological problems. Even for such locations, the asylum often has a highly negative stigma as the place where psychotic serial killers and crazed middle-aged men that skin little girls alive are locked up. This only makes the common and prevalent perception of the mentally ill as being criminally inclined much worse in such communities. The lack of facilities and the distance needed to travel to even find psychiatric help can combine to make it nearly impossible to find help in isolated rural towns.

There are also quite a few that surmise that the environment is an equally important factor. The urban environment places pressure on people at an early age, with even children learning the basic principles of cutthroat competition. It is possible that people who have lived in urban environments all their lives simply have psychological make-ups that are better suited for the harsh business world, whereas rural citizens are less likely to have to encounter such situations.

Tinnitus Preaching to the Choir in your Ears

How much screaming will you tolerate before taking decisive action.

I have learnt to preach to the choir in my ears. I did so because there came a time a when I realized that no one and nothing was going to rid me of my tinnitus.

Just a small reminder of some of the therapies I have tried in order to find some peace and quite in my life Acupuncture, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, infusions, Valium, Anti-depressants, orthodontic treatment, hearing aids, masking aids, Tinnitus Re-Training program, etc. I was asked to wear a specially designed corset to strengthen my back. I was asked to wear a brace by an orthodontic specialist. I have been advised to take Botox and now I am being advised to try a new Herbal Tinnitus Formula which may or may not help relieve Tinnitus. To add to all this, I spent at least 6 weeks in a Tinnitus clinic for rehabilitation measures. I have been off work for almost 1 year and finally lost my job due to my absence.

Written down it all looks very dramatic and all in all, a pretty long story to tell.

These are the negative aspects I had to learn to accept and forget. These elements are history and must stay that way.

The most common thing that most Tinnitus victims share is the fact we will do practically anything to get rid of the screaming in our ears. We will believe anything we are told and follow all instructions. We believe because we trust what we are hearing and we all look forward to the day when our Tinnitus is gone.

Unfortunately we are often left in despair and frustration when we realize that the above therapies dont work and in 90 of all cases, have to admit that our Tinnitus is going to be a part of our every day lives. This is hard to accept for anyone.

If you can established and accept this fact then you will become aware that the only way out of Tinnitus oblivion youre your own will. The cure lies within yourself.

Without stepping on too many toes, I must admit that the medical field did absolutely nothing to ease my Tinnitus. There are of course many theories as to why we get tinnitus and how to treat it but at the end of the day there isnt much that common medicine can do for us.

There is away out of this hell and the only person that will make it happen is you. Ask yourself what you would do to get rid of your own Tinnitus. We have already established that we would do anything to rid ourselves of this torture.

Tinnitus can be ignored. Its a simple trick. Like most tricks it has to be learnt and practiced.

One of my biggest dreams was learning to play the Didgeridoo. I went out and brought one and tried to teach myself to play it. After much frustration and days of trying to get a sound out of it, I finally succeeded. I got a looooong good sound out of it. It sounded really good. The only problem was that the sound diminished after 10 seconds because I had to breath IN The only sound that comes from a didgeridoo is when you breath OUT. The trick is something known as circular breathing. In other words, breathing in and out at the same time. Believe it or not, its possible to breathe In and OUT at the same time and still live to tell the story. However, after weeks and weeks of practice, I learnt how to master circular breathing.

I hope you can see the point I am trying to make. Learning to ignore Tinnitus is like learning to play the didgeridoo. It needs practice and willpower in able to succeed.

Please let me repeat this phrase once more because it is very important you understand this.

You can learn to ignore Tinnitus if you know how. Anyone can learn to ignore Tinnitus.

Your mind has been finely tuned to ignore things its doesnt want to accept. This capability is evident in everyone alive. Think carefully, how many things do you forget or ignore because you dont like them.

Everyday we are confronted with elements we would rather forget.

Tinnitus is another one of them. Learn to reduce its importancy and concentrate more on enjoying quality time.

Its absolutely vital you start realizing that Tinnitus is NOT a disease. You are not sick and you are not suffering from a mental disorder! You must get your life back on track again and start enjoying your life.

Tinnitus is a power that can be manipulated. Havent you been manipulated enough already? Isnt it time you got yourself back into the driving seat and stated taking control again.

You cant let something so unimportant as Tinnitus control your life. This defies all logic!

I did the same and managed to change my lifestyle completely. I stopped smoking I lost 50 pounds in weight. I started to do work outs and go jogging I stopped worrying about Tinnitus In factI stopped worrying about things I couldnt change I wrote an e book and created a website devoted to living with Tinnitus.

All these things I did myself. No help from anyone .I used Tinnitus as a base of energy and manipulated it to meet my own needs.

You know what?I still have the choir in my ears and it is still loud at time, but here again so is life. The only difference now is that I am the preacher and I am in control.

Happy preaching!

Veterans and Depression The Battle to Heal the Wounds of War

Men who enroll in the military service are now at risk for developing different mental health disorders, according to the Institute of Medicine. According to them, military service in a war zone increases a service members’ chance of developing post-traumatic stress disorder, other anxiety disorders, and depression. Serving in a war also increases the chances of alcohol abuse, accidental death, and suicide within the first few years after leaving the war zone. War veterans are also prone to marital and family conflict, including domestic violence due to their psychological and emotional distress. These trouble signs have prompted the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the scientific and medical evidence concerning associations between deployment-related stress and long term adverse effects on health.

Issues with drug abuse, incarceration, unexplained illnesses, chronic fatigue syndrome, gastrointestinal symptoms, skin diseases, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain may also be associated with the stress of being in a war, but the evidence to support these links is weaker. For other health problems and adverse effects that the committee reviewed, the information lacks or is contradictory; the committee could not determine whether links between these ailments and deployment-related stress exist.

Although the report cannot give definite answers regarding the connection between these health problems and the stress of war, it is clear that veterans who were deployed to war zones self-report more medical conditions and poorer health than veterans who were not deployed. The committee found out that those who were deployed and have post-traumatic stress disorder in particular tend to report more symptoms and poorer health. Post-traumatic stress disorder often occurs together with other anxiety disorders, depression, and substance abuse. Its prevalence and severity is associated with an increased exposure to combat.

A continuous obstacle in obtaining better evidence that would yield clear answers is lack of pre- and post-deployment screenings of physical, mental, and emotional status. Conducting comprehensive, standardized evaluations of service member’s medical conditions, psychiatric symptoms and diagnosis, and psychosocial status and trauma history before and after deployment to war zones is necessary, according to the US Department of Defense. Such screenings would provide baseline information for comparisons and data to determine long term consequences of deployment-related stress. In addition, they would help identify at-risk personnel who might benefit from targeted intervention programs during deployment, such as marital counseling or therapy for psychiatric or other disorders, and help the necessary organizations choose in which intervention programs to implement for veterans adjusting to post-deployment life.

It is a long battle between countries, and the only thing that could make these people at war happy would be the memories of their family and friends. Such psychological illnesses or disorders can happen almost anytime, since these people are vulnerable to their environment. War is such a negative concept to look at, and these people experience war each time they wake up. Such negativity is bound to take its toll to the person, whether they may have good relations back at home. By simply looking back at those happy moments, these people at war would really appreciate life compared to what they see now.

Mental Health Awareness Through Online Sanity Tests

Whenever we feel confused or we don’t understand what is going on, and when we feel that we are getting overwhelmed by the turn of events that we almost lose a grip on reality… we tend to think that we may be going nuts or getting crazy.
Insanity, or madness, is a behavior caused by mental instability. Merriam-Webster defines it as a deranged state of the mind or lack of understanding. Insanity can be considered as poor health of the mind, not necessarily of the brain as an organ, which can affect mental health. People who go insane suffer from a defect in their mental processes or functions such as reasoning.
The term insanity encompasses mental disorders such as schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. These mental disorders are characterized by social withdrawal, deterioration of personal care, inability to perceive oneself as a separate entity, rapid shifting of thought and topic, autistic absorption, hallucinatory symptoms, delusions and often depersonalization. Symptoms can be singular or combined with a wide variation among sufferers. Motor activity is generally reduced and appearance become bizarre while perceptual and conversational distortions are evident.
Schizophrenia is a psychotic symptom which continue for at least six months coupled with the deterioration of occupational and social functioning. During a psychotic episode a person is confused about reality and often experiences delusions andor hallucinations.
Delusions are described as false, inaccurate beliefs that the person holds onto even when he or she is presented with accurate information. When a persons belief about one’s importance or station in life is grossly out of proportion to what is really true, the person is experiencing grandiose delusion. A perfect example is someone who claims to being Jesus Christ, or anybody who is an important figure and well-known. On the other hand, when a person believes that there is a conspiracy to harass, punish, or attack him or her, the person is having persecutory delusion. Usually, the person might also believe that the group to which one belongs is being harassed or punished.
Hallucinations are internal sensory perceptions of sights and sounds that are not actually present. People with visual hallucinations may see the image of something that is not real, such as another person. People who have auditory hallucinations hear something that is not really present, such as hearing a voice calling.
Mental health is a concern too often neglected by many of us. Thanks to the Internet, today, there are various websites that you can check which offer online quizzes designed to assess aspects of your mental health, including your risk for depression, anxiety and other emotional disorders. Sanity tests, which may take up to 15 minutes, are based on scientifically validated mental health assessments. Questionnaires are similar with those that a mental health professional might ask about mood and eating and sleeping habits. According to Dr. John Grohol, a psychologist who has created his own sanity site, the score is a numerical expression of your overall emotional health.
However, the mental health community has not officially sanctioned any test to measure one’s sanity. Therefore, one should not make any drastic health decisions based on these results. Still, the insight into your state of mind may offer self-awareness and could prompt you an overdue discussion with your doctor regarding appropriate therapy. Seeking professional advice to help sort out your mental health concerns and identifying areas of mental stress is always necessary.

Best Known Ways to Quit Smoking

When you have finally come to see that your smoking habit has caused damage to your health, and wallet, and general well being, and you have decided that you would like to quit it is good to know that there are a lot of ways to quit smoking.

Quitting smoking depends on many things. It can be fast, or slow, but one thing for sure is that quitting rely on your determination, as well as the help of others. Whatever method you try, you should be mentally prepared for the difficult period that follows your last cigarette. This difficult period is caused when the nicotine your body is addicted to is withdrawn from your body. Withdrawals occur when your body reacts to the lack of nicotine that it has become reliant on.

The sudden impulse to give up smoking is known under the name of “cold turkey” and it is the result of a personal choice. Among the gradual ways to quit smoking may be enumerated the nicotine replacement therapy, the individual or group therapy, some modern and non-medical methods such as acupuncture, kabala practices and others but also physical exercises.

It is incorrect to say that you are addicted to smoking because in fact you are addicted to nicotine and to the idea of a routine. The moment you try to provide the required quantity of nicotine to which your body was used while you were a smoker all you have to do in rest is to keep your hands busy and to work on your psyche. This way you’ll certainly quit this vice.

Acupuncture, hypnosis, laser therapy are some modern methods that come in the help of those who want to quit smoking. Due to the fact that they are rather modern tools their efficiency for a one hundred percent success has not been completely demonstrated.

The first step towards a successful decision to give up smoking is to find a strong motivation. This must be sought in your own person, inside you. Nobody can convince you that you should quit your vice if you are not really determined that you actually want to do this. And also it depends on you which of the ways to quit smoking best suits you, if you think that you are able to do it on your own or to ask for assistance. If you want to choose the latter variant you have several alternatives.

For best results font give up. If one way doesn’t work for you, try another. Everyone is different, and so are the methods of smoking. What works well with one person wont necessarily work well with another.

Massage Information For Consumers

What should someone expect during a massage?

- The massage therapist will ask questions about what prompted you to get a massage.
- The massage therapist will want background information about your physical condition, medical history, lifestyle, stress levels and any painful areas.
- The massage therapist will ask what your health goals are and will discuss how massage may help you achieve those goals.
- During a one-on-one massage, you will be asked to remove clothing to your level of comfort. Clothing is not removed during chair massages.

Consumers also should consider the following tips to help them find a massage therapist who is trained and qualified.

- Are you licensed to practice massage? 35 states have passed legislation to regulate massage therapy
- Are you a member of the American Massage Therapy Association?
- Are you Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork?

Massage May Help Ease Your Pain

Millions of Americans are all too familiar with pain. There can be countless trips to the doctor or chiropractor, pain medications, sleepless nights and the burden of making it through the day while enduring pain.

Have you tried massage?

A recent survey by the American Hospital Association shows that nearly 82 percent of hospitals that use some form of complementary or alternative care use massage therapy, with 70 percent of those hospitals using massage for pain management and pain relief.

A consumer survey commissioned by the American Massage Therapy Association? AMTA reveals that more people than ever are seeking massage to manage and relieve pain. The survey shows that nearly half, 47 percent, of those polled have had a massage specifically for pain relief.

A 2003 survey of 1,998 massage clients showed that 63 percent believed massage therapy provided them greater pain relief than chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy or other bodywork.

Clinical research has shown massage therapy can

- Be more effective for chronic back pain than other complementary therapies.
- Promote relaxation and alleviate the perception of pain and anxiety in cancer patients.
- Reduce post-traumatic headaches better than cold pack treatments.
- Lessen pain and muscle spasms in patients who have undergone heart bypass surgery when part of hospital-based surgery treatment.

The Science Behind the Terror

Fear.

People will either go out of their way to find it and revel in the fact that they’re being terrified out of their skulls. Or they’ll do whatever it takes to avoid it the way someone with social anxiety avoids parties. Fear is a natural part of the human psyche and has often been cited by philosophers as being among the greatest internal motivators of the human spirit. However, despite the fact that we have extensive knowledge of what terrifies people and how fear can play a game with someone’s mental health, we have barely any idea how, exactly, does fear work in the human mind.

Modern science is still unsure what the chemical responses are in the mind when fear is triggered, or what psychoactive medication if any would have an appreciable effect in dispelling fear. There is still more than an air of uncertainty on what biochemical signals the brain produces as a reaction to fear, if there are any being released at all. The development of phobias is a noted process, though there is little data on what the actual biochemical responses they cause are. To put it simply, we may have some understanding of what terrifies us and why, but we don’t quite have a grasp of how it terrifies us. This apparent lack of knowledge, however, is being addressed by researchers at the University of Michigan.

The first area that the research team focused on are the factors that determine the development of fears and phobias in the mind. According to the research, there is some mild evidence that suggest genetics has a role in the development of fear responses. Certain individuals seem genetically predisposed towards being afraid of certain things, which would imply that some fears could possibly be hereditary psychological traits. Another sub-topic of this field of the research involves analyzing the complex chemical responses that trauma causes, with focus on the biochemical cocktail that results in a lifelong fear and need for therapy. It is understood that trauma and extreme situations can enforce a fear in a person, but there is precious little information indicating how the brain reacts to such situations that triggers permanent psychological effects.

The researchers are aware that a part of the brain known as the amygdala is connected to how people react with fear, but is not the sole culprit. The team, aside from finding out what chemical triggers fear, is also busy undertaking the task of finding out what areas of the brain are active when a fear response is activated. This, combined with knowledge of what biochemical responses are generated or involved, might lead to some useful mental health-related developments. One of these could involve the development of drugs that are better designed to handle phobias and irrational fears. Another avenue that the team is interesting in investigating involves the chemical the brain produces to overcome fear. Clearly, analyzing and replicating this can have a wide range of applications, with obvious applications in the medical and military fields.

Nymphomania-Be-Gone

Nymphomania and the male counterpart, satyriasis are no longer official psychological disorders. Arguably, the two above conditions were never really mental health issues in the first place. Rather, the two seemed more like reactions and developments based on culture, morality, and perception. Indeed, even when the two were official problems, it was difficult to define what sort of sexual behavior could be considered to fall under them. Most of the definitions of nymphomania stem from a time when study of a woman’s mental health was intrinsically linked to the condition of her genitalia and sexual health. Scientifically speaking, there probably is a correlation, but not in the way it was originally envisioned.

The History Behind It

The psychosis and the term is used loosely classification known as nymphomania is categorized by excessive sexual behavior. This was defined during a time when human sexuality was poorly understood and a number of beliefs on appropriate female behavior were prevalent. Essentially, during the time that the term was coined and classified as a form of psychosis, women were not supposed to have sexual urges. Women who had mental and emotional stability did not behave in a sexual manner, the definition at the time being a very stringent one. Activities such as flirting were often enough to arouse suspicion, but there are recorded examples of more extreme behavior, such as public masturbation and sexually attacking random men. While women in these reports certainly had some form of mental health disorder, most experts now agree that it was not nymphomania.

Subjective Definitions and Diagnosis

Nymphomania has always been the target of subjective definitions. Judging whether or not a woman’s advances and behavior are inappropriate is difficult, mainly because there are countless factors involved. For example, the relative moral climate of the time and place where the assessment is made can play a role. What would have been considered nymphomaniac-like behavior during the late 18th or 19th century could be considered rather typical sexual behavior for today’s generation. Also, individual perceptions can make it impossible to find a consensus on what does and does not fall under the term. What may be seen as lewd and offensive to one observer could be little more than an expression of sexual health and interest for another. This gave nymphomania the distinction of being the only mental health disorder wherein the diagnosis relies entirely on the judgment of the psychologist, and not based on some objective standard.

Removal From the Books

The terms nymphomania and satyriasis have both been removed from the list of disorders, replaced by the term hypersexuality. The term is not quite a direct replacement of the above. In spirit, it covers much the same problem, but the letter of the definitions and descriptions differ. The new term only takes effect when the behavior becomes clinically dangerous, rather than relying on socio-cultural judgments. In other words, there has to be some sort of notable psychiatric effect other than the behavior itself. However, there is still debate on what would have to be considered before someone is diagnosed with having hypersexuality. The term has been accepted, but there is still heated debate on what behavioral signs are to be taken as symptoms of the problem. For the time being, the only consensus is when the behavior becomes disruptive to other activities and psychological processes.
