Losing weight without losing your mind

Losing weight can be a long, ongoing process and it is too easy to “throw in the towel”, so to speak. This is primarily due to frustrations because of slow results or the seeming lack of results. Keep your sanity in your weight loss goals – learn how to take the little strides to achieve your long term weight loss goals.

1. Make a plan
Do you have a plan? People sometimes get confused by plans and goals. The end result goal in your case is weight loss, the plan is the means you are going to use to get there. While you will undoubtedly have short term goals and a long term goal, they are not your plan. A plan would consist of, for example, eating breakfast; walking a half hour per day; not eating after 8pm; eliminating pop from your daily routine; etc. These are plans that can help you reach your goal of weight loss. If you’ve tried certain things before and they didn’t work because of your lack of commitment then try loosening the plan a little for something that you could easily achieve without pushing yourself too hard. If you have a plan of walkingrunning 1 hour a day but you think that you might give up too easily on that shoot for 15 minutes a day & once you’ve made the 15 minutes try and push yourself for 15 minutes more. You’re much better off making a plan for 15 minutes of walking a day and doing it than making a plan of walking 1 hour a day and never leaving the couch.

2. Execute the plan
The greatest weight loss plan in the world will do no good if you don’t use it. That’s where so many people fail is that they want to lose the weight but aren’t willing to take any steps to actually meet their goals. It’s like someone saying “I want to make 5,000 this month” but doesn’t have a job and never leaves the couch to look for one. A job is no more going to show up at your door and give you 5,000 for sitting than you are going to lose weight if you continue to do nothing about it. As was stated above, if your plan is not something you think you can commit to loosen up your plan to something that is feasible given your lifestyle and situation.

3. See the plan through
Keep on keeping on, stay focused on your weight loss goals, and don’t give up. It is not the easiest thing getting started, but it is a proven fact that it takes 21 days to form a habit. Keep your plan up for a few weeks and you’ll be well on your way to your weight loss goals.

By simply creating a plan, working a plan and staying with it, you’ll soon begin to see results with your weight loss goals. Sometimes it only takes us seeing the start of results to get us really motivated to take the weight off.

Get Into the Closet after Weight Loss Surgery

After youve had a gastric bypass surgery, youll lose a lot of weight in a very short period of time. This is a double-edged sword in the sense that you rejoice over the fact that you are losing weight so rapidly, yet in addition, you face challenges of wearing clothing that properly fits your ever-shrinking body. Theres a way you can manage this bittersweet dilemma.

It becomes very frustrating as you rummage though your clothes trying to find items that fit you. In my own personal experience, I was changing clothing sizes every three 3 weeks, and I can attest to this dilemma of trying on clothing that was either too loose or still too snug to wear. The time it took me to actually find the outfit of the day ended up being so time-consuming and frustrating, I had to figure out a way to speed up the process of simply clothing myself, easing the frustrations of scattered clothing everywhere, and eliminating the sour attitude I had about clothes when I should have been thrilled to suffer from such a happy problem of finding smaller-sized clothing to wear.

The SOLUTION was to GET INTO THE CLOSET and dresser drawers and organize my clothing by SIZE.

This was a new concept! There are several ways weve always organized our closets and drawers Perhaps weve done it by color, by season, by fabric, by climate, by event, by holiday, by clothing type, by style, etc. etc. But very FEW people have ever organized their clothing by SIZE.

The advantage of organizing your closet and drawers by size is that you can easily locate them and making them readily handy during those trying-on adventures. Then as you move out of one size and progress to the next smaller size, its an easier transition to find that next smaller size that fits you far better than that slightly larger size that probably drapes on you in an unflattering way.

Be sure when you are organizing your closet that you take into account those clothing labels which may not reflect a true size. Keep in mind that when you buy or borrow used clothing, some articles may have shrunken, or perhaps people had the article altered to better fit their exact body type. When this happens, simply pin a little tag on the clothing that states what size YOU believe it really is according to how it fits your body. For example, a second-hand pair of jeans may have a size 14 tag on them, but because of shrinkage, they will fit you as if they are a size 10. Pin a little tag that says size 10 on them and organize among your other size-10-clothing for easy reference. This eliminates the need to try on the jeans over and over again because you cant remember how they fit your body. And if youre not sure what size the garment represents, then pin a different note on them such as, Maybe in one more month specify month. Figure out what note system works best for you.

Consider arranging a drawer or bin labeled Almost Me. Once you place items in this spot, be sure to try these clothes on every two weeks. Few things are more painful than having clothing in there and you waited too long to try them on and they are now too large to wear! I can recall some clothing I looked forward to wearing but never was able to wear them simply because by the time I checked on them, they were too large for me! Had I checked them out at a set time, such as every-other Thursday or something like that, I wouldnt have missed my window of opportunity to wear them.

As soon as you are out of that larger size, PACK THEM AWAY and give them to someone else, sell them, or donate them to a charitythrift store. There is no need to hang onto those clothes! Really! I had somebody ask me, after I lost 80 pounds, when will you be convinced that youre not going to ever wear those clothes again? After losing 100 pounds? After losing 150 pounds? When? This person made me realize that I needed to act on trust that I was indeed losing weight and I would not be gaining that type of weight back again. What a happy day it was to pack up all of those clothes and part with the memories that went along with them!

Realize and accept the fact that you will go through many changes in your clothing size as you lose your weight after a bariatric surgery. If you started out wearing a size 3X and youve lost 30-50 pounds, you should not be wearing those same size 3X clothes; for if you are, you are, you are not complimenting the fact that you are losing weight and your appearance may look too droopy or saggy.

Plan a time when you can begin this project of getting into the closet and drawers. Its going to be work, but very well-worth it to you in the long run. Think SIZE only. Nothing else. Then each day when you search for something to wear, the right size of the day will be at your fingertips and not all scattered throughout various places to annoy you.

Losing weight so rapidly is changing your life and it should also change the way your closets are organized. You have different needs now not just in how you eat, but how you locate what youre going to wear for the day. Make is easier and a pleasant experience for you. Size matters!

Is Gastric Bypass Weight Loss Surgery Right For You?

Weight loss surgery can be divided into three types

1. Restrictive procedures to reduce the size of your stomach,
2. Mal-absorptive procedures alter the flow from your stomach to your intestine, and
3. Combination procedures that involve the characteristics of both of the above procedures.

This article will be focusing on the first option.

Gastric bypass surgery is one type of weight loss surgical procedures that can be used, and is actually commonly used, to cause significant weight loss for a patient that is exceedingly obese. Gastric bypass surgery is designed to reduce the body’s intake of calories. Calorie reduction through this surgery is accomplished in two main ways

1. After the surgery, the patients stomach is actually smaller than it was. This means that the patient will feel full faster and it will be easier for the candidate to learn to reduce the amount of food that heshe consumes.
2. Part of the patients stomach and small intestines are literally bypassed in the food consumption process so that fewer calories are absorbed by the candidate.

Prior to any successful weight loss operation, the patients doctor will give the patient a complete medical examination to evaluate the patients state of overall health. A psychological evaluation will also be undertaken. If at the conclusion of the consultation and evaluation, the doctor does not feel the patient is ready, then the surgery will not be recommended. Should the doctor recommend the procedure, then the patient will receive extensive nutritional counseling before and after the surgery.

Gastric bypass surgery is always performed under anesthesia. There are two basic steps to the surgery

1. The first step in the surgery makes the patient’s stomach smaller. The surgeon divides the stomach into a small upper section and a larger bottom section using staples that are like stitches. The top section of the stomach will hold any digested food.

2. After the stomach has been divided, the surgeon connects a section of the small intestine to the pouch. This ensures that the food bypassed the lower portion of the stomach.

Gastric bypass surgery can be performed using a laparoscope. This technique is actually far less invasive than traditional surgery. The incisions are much smaller and therefore are a little less painful and a lot less noticeable, which lowers the risk of large scars and hernias after the procedure. Once the small incisions are made in the abdomen, then the surgeon passes slender surgical instruments through these narrow openings, as well as, a camera so that he or she can see the maneuvering of the instruments.

If you have gastric bypass surgery, then you will usually need to stay in the hospital for 4 to 5 days after the doctor performs the surgery on you. Your doctor will approve your discharge to go back home once you are able to do the following

1. Move without too much discomfort,
2. Eat liquid andor pureed food without vomiting it back up, and
3. No longer requiring pain medication to be administered by injection.

You will remain on liquid or pureed food for several weeks after the surgery. Even after that time, you will feel full very quickly. This is because the new stomach pouch initially only holds a tablespoonful of food. The pouch eventually expands but will generally allow you no more than one cup of food.

How Not To Gain Holiday Weight So You Have No Need To Lose Weight

Holiday season is just round the corner. There will be parties, celebrations, food and champagne. Ahhhh….that irresistible succulent Christmas turkey and sumptious pudding. That mouth watering new year buffet and the countdown champagne are so tempting. Your spirit is willing but your flesh is week. You binge.

So what is price you pay for your hoilday binge? Well, stepped onto the bathroom scale and horror of horrors, you have gained a few pounds!! Aaaaaaaaarrrrgghhh!! You pulled your hair and gnash your teeth wondering how you can lose the holiday weight you have gained. You even contemplate to engage a personal trainer to put you on a weight loss program. Whoa, fret no longer. With a little thought and planning, you can avoid holiday weight gain.

Here are some tips on how not to put on holiday weight so that you don’t have to lose weight post holiday season.

1 Just Remember that the holiday season is just a few days.

So that the days you squeal , “I will gain weight around the holidays,” or “I know I will gain 5 pounds during holiday season” or “Ill start a weight loss program after holiday season is over.” are over. Why? Well, since you know that there is only a couple of days you will eat more, then you just eat more on those days and no more. Don’t let it the binge into a week or more by taking home all the leftovers or storing more sweets snf pastries than you need for that particular holiday. It is usually what people find in the fridge and on the kitchen shelf after the holiday that they continue to binge. Empty fridge and the shelves. This will help you not to put on too much weight so you need not lose weight post holiday season.

2 Turn Off Your TV Set

Hey! Instead of watching all those holiday special programs on your goggle box, get moving! Instead of watching a soccer game on TV, get a ball and go to the nearest park for a kick around. Instead of lying on your couch snacking to a packet of chips, go lie by the poolside, then do a few laps. Better still, get your family and friends to join you. Go for a jog instead. If it is winter where you live, be innovative, think of some indoor activities or exercises you can do.While others gain weight, you may even lose weight. Afterall its a holiday. Have fun!

3 Avoid Acohol To Avoid Weight Gain

One gram of alcohol packs a whalloping 7 calories. In contrast, carbs and protein have only 4 calories per gram. Calories from alcohol are just, well, calories with zero nutritional value. They will rapidly convert into fat fast when you do not burn them off quickly. Avoid high-calorie mixed drinks like cocktails that are full of sugar or beer which are high in carbohydrates which translate into even more calories. You will definitely need to be on a weight loss program if you indulge in too much alcohol.

4 Drink Plenty Of Water

Juices, soft drinks and coffee don’t count! Just good ole plain water. Water flushes out toxins in the body, helps the body recover from dehydration caused by alcohol consumption. You will also feel full so that you will not over eat resulting in gaining weight.

5 Skip Dessert To Lose Weight

Do you need those sweet and calorie laden thingies? If you must have them, choose those that are not that sweet or even better, just have some fibrous fruits and nuts. Do this to keep your weight in check.

If you can keep to these tips this coming holiday season, then you will not gain weigh and thus may not need to lose weight post holiday or embark on a weight loss program. Simple and cool isn’t it?

Why Your Diet May Not Be Working

Jennifer, a middle-aged single mother with one six-year-old daughter, has been skipping sweets for a few weeks now. Shes also become a stickler for portion control. She feels as if shes eating less than ever, and shes been diligently exercising for an hour at a time at least four days a week. Yet, she hasnt lost a single pound. The question is, Why?

This is a dilemma which affects dieters the world over. They think they are taking the steps necessary to lose weight, but nothing seems to be happening. In essence, they are trapped in a dieting rut and they dont know how to free themselves. As a result, they become frustrated and depressed and may then engage in binge eating.

One of the problems with diets is that they are often standardized. As a result, they dont take into consideration your individual physiology and metabolism. They provide a cookie-cutter approach to weight lossan approach which may not work in your individual case. As a result, an increasing number of people are turning to dieticians to formulate a person weight loss strategy for them. This process has been made easier through the Internet, where you can correspond with a dietician any time of the day or night via e-mail. The dietician can also act as your personal coach, helping you through your dieting dilemmas.

Another reason that you may be failing at your diet is because of a lack of support. You may have family members who can eat whatever they want and seemingly not gain a pound. As a result, they may fill your refrigerator with junk food, leading you into temptation. Also, you may feel as if you have no one to turn to in order to discuss your weight problems. In order to solve this problem, many individuals look to psychotherapists to help them with their food-related issues. This can be particularly important if an individual has turned to purging in an effort to combat their weight problems. Bulimia is a serious disease which must be treated in order to ensure the good health of the patient. Thankfully, there are a number of treatment programs throughout the U.S. specifically focusing on bulimia.

Yet another reason for diet failure is hidden calories. You may literally be consuming calories and not even realize it. For instance, the frappucinos that are so popular today are loaded with caloriesas many as 600 in a single serving! You may also be indulging in sugary sodasanother source of extra calories. By taking a few simple steps, such as eliminating the exotic coffee drinks from your diet and substituting skim milk for whole milk, you may be able to eliminate the hidden calories that are denying you dieting success.

Lack of consistency can also be a diet-killer. You might go on a diet for a while, then quit before youve made any measurable progress. Its only natural to want to see quick results. The problem is that healthy weight loss involves losing only a couple of pounds a week. That means youll have to stay on your diet for months before you see appreciable weight loss. Discouraging? It can be, but if you keep a positive attitude you can achieve your ideal weight.

You may also be more successful in your dieting if you consider it to be a lifestyle change. Therefore, your diet becomes a meal plan for life. This means that you must change the way you look at food. It is designed to be fuel for your body, and nothing more. As a result, you should not turn to food to make you feel better or to provide you with a sense of comfort. A lifestyle change implies commitment; it means that you are prepared to follow the plan for the long haul. If you feel as if you cannot be on your diet for any appreciable length of time, perhaps its time to consider a different diet. Your aim ultimately should be not simply to lose weight, but to become healthier. A fad diet will not allow you to reach that milestone. Therefore, you must choose your diet carefully.

Can You Safely Lose 30 Pounds in 30 Days?

Spend five minutes doing the research and youll quickly see that conventional weight loss thinking says the only safe way to lose weight is at the rate of 2 pounds a week.

If faster weight loss is accomplished using drugs, or chemicals, or harsh stimulants such as ephedra, ma huang and caffeine, then conventional thinking is correct. What good is losing 15 pounds or more in a month if you damage or completely lose the use of your liver or kidneys?

These miracle weight loss methods only result in a miracle if you dont damage your bodily functions, or die in the process.

Having said that, there is at least ONE way you can lose weight quickly, while at the same time improving your overall health.

It involves a combination of a protein-rich diet drink, a common sense approach to regular meals, and the use of a Internal Cleanser to remove the buildup of toxins in our bodies.

These toxins are ingested by all of us in a variety of ways bad air, chemically enhanced public water, pesticide coated foods, etc. These foreign invaders are isolated by our bodies in fat cells, where they do the least damage to our system. These fat cells are then surrounded by water kind of like the way an old castle used moats to protect against invaders, only in reversethe invaders are trapped in the Fat Castle, and surrounded by water to keep them there.

Once the toxins are flushed from our bodies, the fat cells are then burned up as a source of energy, and the excess water is also absorbed and flushed in the same process. This can result is rapid weight loss I lost 8 pounds in my first 5 days, on the way towards 25 pounds lost in the first 30 days, and 60 pounds lost in 100 days.

The other two factors that play into rapid weight loss is to make sure your body gets enough protein during a 24 hour period. The easiest way to accomplish this is by using a protein supplement normally in powdered form which you mix into a drink or a shake or a soup. Figure about one gram of protein per pound of body weight.

At the same time, youll want to limit your intake of bad carbohydrates think Potato Chips, Popcorn, etc. and fat. This will cause your body to begin to burn the excess fat you have stored up. Youll also want to eliminate all your sources of refined sugars. Sodas are the biggest offenders here, but coffee with any form of sweetener will slow down your weight loss as well.

For your normal meals, try and limit your caloric intake to about 600 calories. If you have two protein drinks during the day breakfast and dinner with a 600 calorie lunch and little to no snacking apples and unsalted almonds are okay in small amounts youll be on a 1,200-1,400 calorie diet, and your body will overnight become a fat burning machine.

Toss in a little walking a mile or so to begin if you are in any reasonable shape, less if you are not and you are only a month away from dropping as much as 30 pounds, safely.

When you experiment by following your full signal and stop eating at that point, you will find yourself feeling light and energized. You may not even feel a difference in your stomach at all.

Is Losing Weight Via Gastric Bypass For Everyone?

Gastric bypass surgery is not about losing weight the easy way and looking good, the operation is about improving health.

There are several types of gastric bypass procedures, but all of them involve bypassing part of the small bowel by greater or lesser degrees. Surgical options Gastric bypass procedures involve constructing a gastric pouch whose outlet is a Y-shaped limb of small bowel of varying lengths. By far, the most common procedure is the gastric bypass, which is done both open and laparoscopically.

In most types of gastric bypass surgeries done today only 50 cm of the intestine is allowed to function in normal fashion.

How is the gastric bypass surgery different than the LAP-BAND? Generally, gastric bypass patients stay in the hospital one to two days following surgery, and recovery takes approximately one to three weeks. With laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, most patients are completely back to normal activities around three weeks after surgery.

Of the several surgical variations of gastric bypass now available, the most widely used is the “Roux-en-Y” procedure. Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass involves dividing the stomach and forming a small pouch while sealing off a large proportion of the stomach. In lay terms it is like a hybrid of the intestinal bypass and a gastric stapling procedure. Early adverse event rates are low following laparoscopic gastric banding, and are probably lower than gastric bypass. The most common are the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, or simply, the gastric bypass and the Lap-Band, or adjustable gastric banding system.

As with any surgery, there are possible risks with gastric bypass. With no treatment, one in four gastric bypass patients will develop gallstones following surgery. During the recovery period the limitations imposed by the gastric bypass procedure should be kept in mind.

The following are common phases in the gastric bypass diet progression Liquids. In general, the gastric bypass diet includes foods that are high in protein, and low in fat, fiber, calories, and sugar. Fiber, found in foods like bran, popcorn, raw vegetables, and dried beans, is also limited on the gastric bypass diet. The gastric bypass diet is low in sweet and sugary foods for reasons.

Nonetheless, gastric bypass surgery is a major surgical procedure and is certainly not suitable for everyone and is not without risks. For these people the traditional remedy of diet and exercise simply doesn’t work and they are turning increasingly towards gastric bypass surgery. A soon-to-be published study of gastric-bypass patients age 65 and older also showed that the procedure produced good results and improved quality of life. I have a friend that had gastric bypass surgery about 6 months ago – he is doing great!

Do Blood Types Really Matter?

A strong craze that has appeared, and managed to stay around, is the blood type diet. A blood type diet is a nutrition plan based around your blood type. This kind of diet first appeared and became popular in a book written and released by Peter D’Adamo. He claims that the diet will not only bring about weight lossbut can also assist with allergy and infection resistance, in addition to overall good health. These claims have not been proven, but have not been disproven, either.

Basically this is a system diet based on blood type, going on the theory that different blood types emerged at different points in history, and by watching the history and matching it with a blood type, you can tell which sort of food is meant for which individual blood type. Blood type A, according to this diet plan, should avoid red meat, eat a lot of fish and vegetables, and eat little dairy. The book recommends only light exercises with this group.

Blood type B is supposed to avoid chicken and bacon, but eat plenty of meat including red meat and dairy, a little fish, and a lot of fruits and vegetables. An AB blood type combines the two diets that are meant for type A and type B no big surprise. Blood type O is the maverick. For type O blood, the recommended diet is very low in carbohydrates and high in protein much like the Atkins and low in dairy. Type O is also told to engage in a lot of exercise.

The general consensus on this diet is that weight loss and other health improvements may occur not because of blood types, but because most people who follow this will eat a lot healthier in general and includes low calorie diets that will probably bring about weight loss in anyone. In addition, the type O that has an Atkins-like diet also exercises a lot more, burning off the extra fat that would come with the meat, which once again is considered habit and not blood type driven.

While the idea is intriguing, much of the natural weight loss that occurs seems to be for very valid reasons than blood type. That being said, the advice given in the book seems to work, and therefore why question the source? If it works, then who cares if the blood type has anything to do or not? But this is a program that has worked for a lot of people. Its not the results that are being argued, but the reasoning behind it.
